Women’s Ashes 2023: England Women beat Australia in a thrilling encounter.

 The England team stay alive with a thrilling win over Australia in the first One-day international match played at County Ground, Bristol on 12 July 2023.

Australian captain Alyssa Healy won the toss and decided to bat first. Healy got off to a perfect with two brilliant boundaries before Kate Cross dismissed her via a review for LBW. The umpire called it not out and it was overturned to out as it was hitting the stumps. Phoebe Litchfield looked impressive with positive shots. Ellyse Perry was given a reprieve as Amy Jones came ahead of Ecclestone.

Litchfield looked impressive with four boundaries in an over off Lauren Bell. At the end of the first 10 overs, Australian women raced away to 62 for 1. Sophie Ecclestone took a stunning one-handed catch to dismiss Litchfield at mid-off. Litchfield and Perry added 61 runs for the 2nd wicket. Beth Mooney looked itchy against disciplined England bowling. Ellyse Perry was given another chance as Sarah Glenn dropped a sitter at mid-on.

Sarah Glenn eventually got the prize scalp of Ellyse Perry with easy catch to Nat Sciver Brunt. Perry and Mooney added 37 runs for the 3rd wicket. Tahila McGrath and Beth Mooney steadied the ship for Australia team with singles and hitting boundaries. Alice Capsey produced magic dismissing McGrath to end 38 runs partnership for the 4th wicket.

Beth Mooney put pressure on England bowlers keeping the scoreboard ticking along with Ash Gardner. Lauren Bell struck for the hosts dismissing Gardner with a good running catch backward by Brunt to end 41 runs partnership for the 5th wicket. Bell struck in the same over to dismiss Annabel Sutherland leaving Australia in trouble.

Beth Mooney took charge and showed her class completing her fifty off 71 deliveries. Jess Jonassen contributed valuable runs with some impressive blows to bring back Australia into the game. Ecclestone dismissed Jonassen in the 48th over. Jonassen and Mooney added 55 runs for the 7th wicket. Georgia Warhem scored quickfire cameo as Mooney remained not out on 81 to help Australian women post 263 for 8 in 50 overs.

Chasing 264 runs to win, Tammy Beaumont showed intent right from the word putting pressure on the Australian opening bowlers. Ellyse Perry got breakthrough by dismissing Sophia Dunkley with a lovely delivery. Alice Capsey and Beaumont looked in an attacking mood as Australian bowlers ordinary with their lines and lengths. At the end of the first 10 overs, England's women raced away to 84 for 1.

Beaumont and Capsey kept the scoreboard ticking before Wareham struck to dismiss Beaumont with simple catch to McGrath. Capsey and Beaumont added 74 runs for the 2nd wicket. Ash Gardner got the big wicket of Capsey providing an easy catch to Sutherland at long-off. The experienced pair of Nat Sciver Brunt and Heather Knight kept the scoreboard ticking before Jonassen dismissed Brunt with comfortable catch to Wareham. Knight and Brunt added 42 runs for the 4th wicket.

Dani Wyatt and Knight looked comfortable before Schutt struck to dismiss Wyatt with a lovely catch by Jonassen at backward point. Wyatt and Knight added 31 runs for the 5th wicket. Wareham struck to get rid of Amy Jones with a simple return catch.

Heather Knight stayed calm with well made half-century off 69 deliveries. Sophie Ecclestone and Sarah Glenn went in quick succession to leave the match in the balance. Kate Cross played a vital role with some lovely shots. Heather Knight hit winning runs with a boundary to help England women win the match by 2 wickets. Knight and Cross added unbeaten 32 runs for the 9th wicket.

England Women 267 for 8 in 48.1 overs (Heather Knight 75*, Beaumont 47, Gardner 3/42, Wareham 2/34) beat Australian women 263 for 8 in 50 overs (Beth Mooney 81*, Perry 41, Lauren Bell 2/56, Brunt 2/38) by 2 wickets.

For her unbeaten 75 off 86 deliveries, Heather Knight was named the player of the match award. With this win, England women leveled the multi-format Ashes series at 6-6.

The second One-day international will be played at Rose Bowl, Southampton on 16th July. It promises to be another exciting encounter in front of capacity crowd.
