Malaysia Open 2024: Satwik/Chirag Finishes Runners-Up
The Indian pairing of Satwik/Chirag went down fighting to the number 1 ranked Chinese pairing of Liang and Wang in the finals of Super 1000 Malaysia Open played in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 14th January.
Satwik/Chirag began the first set on an aggressive note
putting pressure on the Chinese pair right from the word go. At the mid-game break,
the Indian pairing had a commanding 11-4 lead. After the break, it was one-way
traffic as Satwik/Chirag won the first game easily by 21-9.
The second game saw the Chinese pair showing their domination
over the Indian pairing. Liang and Wang played attacking shots making life
tough for Satwik/Chirag. At the mid-game break, the Chinese pair had an 11-6 lead.
After the break, the Indian pair fought back strongly to reduce the gap to 15-17.
Satwik/Chirag committed few errors as Liang and Wang won the second game by
21-18 to force the match into the decider.
It was a great start by the Indian pair in the 3rd
and deciding game. They played with an attacking mindset keeping pressure on Liang
and Wang. At the mid-game interval, Satwik/Chirag had an 11-7 lead. After the
break, Wang showed his attacking style that put the Indian pair under pressure
to level the scores at 12-12.
Satwik looked out of sorts as the Chinese pair took the lead for
the first time. The match saw attacking skills by both pairs and eventually
lost the match by 17-21. It was an impressive performance by the Indian pairing
as they proved their worth with some lovely play in the first event of 2024.
The Indian pairing would look to continue their winning form
as they will play the Super 750 India Open that will take place in New Delhi
from 16th January onwards.
