Badminton Asia Team Championship 2024: Indian team loses to China, Face Japan In Quarterfinals
The Indian Men’s team went down fighting 2-3 in the last group match against China played at Shah Alam, Malaysia on 15th February 2024.
It was an ideal start for the Indians as HS Prannoy defeated
Weng Hong in three games. The first game was a disappointing outing with Indian
looking out of sorts losing with scoreline of 6-21. HS Prannoy made a strong
comeback into the match fighting back each time he was trailing before winning
the second game at 21-18.
The third game was also closely fought encounter as both
players fought for each point. It went right down the wire before Prannoy held
onto his nerves to win it by 21-19 to give India a 1-0 lead.
Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun went down to Chen Boyang and Liu
Yi in the first men’s doubles. Satwik/Chirag was rested ahead of the knockout
matches. The first game was a one-sided affair as the Chinese pair won the first game
by 21-15. It was a closely fought second game as both pairs fought for each
point before the Indian pairing won it by 21-19.
The third game was also closely fought encounter as both
pairs fought for each point, but this time Chen and Liu won it by 21-19 to level
the scores at 1-1.
Lakshya Sen had an easy outing in the second men’s singles
beating Lei Lanxi in straight games by 21-11, 21-16. Sen played with aggression
and did not allow any chances to give India a 2-1 lead in the tie.
Suraj Goala and Krishnamurthy Roy suffered a straight-set
loss to Ren and Xie. The Indian pairing never looked comfortable against the
Chinese by 13-21, 9-21 as Chinese made it 2-2.
Chirag Sen also could not capitalize on the chances of losing to
Wang in straight games. Sen showed promise but was unable to put pressure on the Chinese with scoreline of 15-21, 16-21.
The Indian men’s team finished second behind China with Hong
Kong losing both games.
