Badminton Asia Team Championship 2024: Indian Women’s Team Stun Japan To Qualify For Finals

The Indian Women’s badminton team scripted history as they defeated Japan 3-2 in the semi-finals of the Asia team championship played at Shah Alam, Malaysia on 17th February 2024.

It was not an ideal start for the Indian team as PV Sindhu suffered a straight-game loss to Aya Ohori. The first game did not go well for the Indian as she lost it by 13-21. PV Sindhu showed great fighting spirit in the second game despite trailing most of the time. She equaled the scores at 20-20 before Ohori held onto her nerves to win by 22-20 giving Japan a 1-0 lead in the tie.

The women’s doubles pair of Gayatri Gopichand and Tressa Jolly fought strongly to beat Nami Matsuyama and Shida in three games. The first game saw the Indian pair play attacking badminton to win the first game comfortably at 21-17. It was a strong comeback by the Japanese pairing of Matsuyama and Shida winning easily at 21-16.

The third game began on an even keel as both pairs took alternate points. Jolly and Gopichand struggled as they conceded as the Japanese made it 19-19. It ebbed and flowed before the Indian pairing won by 22-20 to level the tie at 1-1.

Ashmita Chaila produced a stunning performance as she defeated Nozomi Okuhara in two straight games. Chaila looked in great control right from the word go putting pressure on the former champion. The Indian won the first game easily at 21-17.

Chaila looked effective with her drop shots making life tough for the Japanese. The Indian won the second game easily by 21-14 to give India a 2-1 lead.

The second women’s doubles saw Ashwini Ponnappa and PV Sindhu lose to Rena Miyuara and Ayako in two straight games. It was a one-sided affair as the Indian pairing never looked comfortable as they lost by 14-21, 11-21 to level the tie at 2-2.

16-year-old Anmol Kharab showed great skills defeating Nidara in two straight games. The Indian kept the pressure on the Japanese by playing attacking shots winning the first game by 21-14. It was a much closer fight in the second game as India took the lead at the interval.

After the break, Kharab looked a little nervous committing unforced errors. After being level at 18-18, the Indian won 3 points in succession to win it by 21-18 to help India seal the tie at 3-2 and qualify for Badminton Asia Championship finals for the first time in their history. They would face Thailand in the finals for the gold medal.
