Badminton Asia Team Championship 2024: Indian Women’s Team Beat Thailand To Lift The Title
The Indian Women’s badminton team created history as they defeated Thailand in a thrilling 3-2 win during the finals of the Badminton Asia Team Championship played at Shah Alam, Malaysia on 18th February 2024.
It was an ideal start for the Indian team as PV Sindhu
looked in great control defeating Kathegong in two straight games. Sindhu showed
attacking skills winning by 21-12, 21-12 to help India 1-0 lead.
The women’s doubles pairing of Tressa Jolly and Gayatri
Gopichand edged past higher ranked Thai pair of Jongkolphan and Rawinda in
three thrilling games. The first game saw both pairs fight for each point
before Jolly and Gayatri won it by 21-16.
It was another closely fought affair in the second game as
both pairs showed spirit before the Thai pair won it by 21-18. The third game
started slowly for the Indian pairing but made a strong comeback to win by 21-16 giving
India a 2-0 lead.
Asmita Chaila went down in straight games to Busnan in
second singles. It was one-way traffic as the Indian struggled against the experienced
Thai player losing by 11-21, 14-21. With this win, Thailand reduced to 1-2.
It was another one-sided affair in the second doubles with
Priya and Shurti Mishra losing to the Aimsaard sisters comfortably by 11-21, 9-21.
The tie was level at 2-2 and it went down to decider.
The 16-year-old Anmol Kharab showed her character once again by getting the better of Pornpicha Choeikeewong in two straight games. It was an
impressive performance by Kharab putting enough pressure on higher ranked
Thailand player. Kharab won the first game comfortably by 21-14.
The second game was also one-sided affair as Kharab won it
by 21-9 to help the Indian women’s team register their first-ever title at the Asian
level.

The Indian women’s team had a memorable tournament. They
began defeating top-seeded China 3-2 to top their pool. 16-year Anmol Kharab
showed their fighting spirit by defeating much higher-ranked Chinese player.
India cruised past Hong Kong, China with a 3-0 scoreline in
the quarterfinals. Sindhu, the doubles pairing of Tanisha Crasto and Ponnappa, Asmita
Chaila won their respective matches.
India played their hearts out as they stunned Japan in the
semi-finals with a thrilling 3-2 scoreline. PV Sindhu lost the first encounter to
Aya Ohori before Jolly and Gayatri showed fighting spirit to level the score. Asmita
Chalia produced one of the biggest upset defeating former champion Okuhara. Anmol
Kharab was the star of the show again defeating Nidara in two straight games.
