WPL Match 6 2024: UP Warriorz Open Their Account With A Big Win
UP Warriorz
finally opened their account with a commanding win over defending Champions
Mumbai Indians played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on 28th February
2024.
UP Warriorz
captain Alyssa Healy won the toss and decided to field first. Yastika Bhatia
and Hayley Mathews looked cautious in the first three overs before putting
pressure on UP Warriorz bowlers. At the end of the first six overs, MI made 36
for 0.
Mathews got
a reprieve as she was given out by the umpire but on review, it was overturned too
not out. Grace Harris eventually got a breakthrough getting rid of Bhatia with
a good catch by Gayakwad. MI openers put on 50 runs laying a strong foundation
for a decent total. The first timeout
was taken with the scoreboard reading 58 for 1.
After the
timeout, Hayley Mathews was dropped by Tahila McGrath at the boundary and then Deepti
Sharma. A horrendous mix-up as stand-in captain Brunt gave his wicket away.
Brunt and Mathews added 42 runs for the 2nd wicket. Mathews looked in decent touch,
reaching fifty off 44 deliveries. After
lot of chances going down, Tahila McGrath took a sharp catch at long-on. MI
ended the 2nd timeout at 113 for 3.
Amelia Kerr,
Pooja Vastkar, and Issy Wong contributed valuable runs as Mumbai Indians made
161 for 6 in 20 overs. Harmanpreet Kaur
and Shabnim Ismail were not featured in the playing XI. Anjali Sarvani, Grace
Harris, Sophie Ecclestone, Deepti Sharma, and Gayakwad took 1 wicket each. UP Warriorz's
fielding and catching were not up to the mark as they dropped multiple catches
and run-out chances.
Chasing 162
runs to win, Kiran Navgire opened the innings along with Alyssa Healy. Navgire
took charge putting enough pressure on Mumbai India's bowlers not allowing
them to settle. Navgire kept the scoreboard ticking with big shots. At the end
of the first six overs, UP Warriorz scored 61 for 0. UP Warriorz ended the
first timeout at 75 for 0.
Kiran
Navgire reached fifty off just 25 balls making life tough for MI bowlers. Kerr
eventually got the breakthrough getting rid of Navgire stumped. Navgire and
Healy put on 94 runs for the opening wicket. Issy Wong struck afterwards
getting rid of McGrath with a review. The umpire called not out but on review,
it was overturned to out-hitting the stumps.
Alyssa
Healy also went afterward to leave UP Warriorz in some trouble. Grace Harris
and Deepti Sharma showed intent to put pressure back on MI bowlers. Both
batters ensured that UP Warriorz ended the 2nd timeout at 149 for 3.
Harris and Sharma helped UP register a comfortable 7-wicket win with 21 balls
to spare. Both UP Warriorz batters added unbeaten 65 runs for the 4th
wicket.
For her 57
off 31 balls, Kiran Navgire was named the player of the match award.

beat MI 161 for 6 in 20 overs ( Hayley Mathews 55, Grace Harris 1/20) by 7
wickets.
