FIH Pro Hockey League 2023/24: India Thrash Argentina
The Indian men’s
hockey ended the Antwerp leg with a resounding win over Argentina in Antwerp on
26th May 2024.
Argentina
got off to a perfect start as Monja scored a superb field goal in the 3rd
minute. Arijit Mondal produced a sensational field goal in the 7th
minute to level the scores at 1-1. It was an evenly matched game as both teams
played attacking hockey, not allowing other teams to score goals. At the end of
the first quarter, the score remained at 1-1.
The second quarter
began on a positive note for India with a field goal by Nilkanta Sharma in the
18th minute to give a 2-1 lead. Argentina made a strong comeback
with a penalty corner goal by Keenan Nicholas via rebound in the 24th
minute to level the scores at 2-2. The Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh
converted a lovely penalty corner in the 29th minute to give the
lead back at 3-2 and ended the first half with a 3-2 scoreline in favor of
India.
It was a
great start to the third quarter as both teams got chances to score goals but the
defense was solid enough. P Sreejesh came as a goalkeeper replacing Krishna
Pathak who kept in the first two quarters. At the end of the third quarter, the
scores remained 3-2 in favor of India.
The fourth
quarter began off brilliantly for India as Harmanpreet Singh's penalty corner
was converted into a penalty stroke as Lucas Martinez saved it illegally.
Harmanpreet Singh made it 4-2 via a penalty stroke in the 50th
minute. Harmanpreet Singh scored another goal with a penalty stroke in the 52nd
minute to give India a 5-2 lead.
Argentina
made a strong comeback with two goals by Mariucci and Martinez in the 54th
and 57th minute to reduce the margin to 4-5. The Indian defense
remained solid to get three valuable points winning by 5-4.
India
played two matches against Argentina and Belgium in Antwerp. The first match
against Argentina was a 2-2 draw before India won in shootouts by 5-4. India was
completely outplayed by Belgium with a scoreline of 1-4.
The Indian
team played better hockey with a 2-2 draw against Belgium but lost by 1-3 in
the shootouts.
With this
win over Argentina, India moved to 2nd place in the points table of the
Pro Hockey League. They will next play twice against Germany and Great Britain before
they move to the Olympics.
