ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8: South Africa Qualify For Semi-Finals With A Thrilling Win
South
African Cricket team held onto their nerves to defeat hosts West Indies in a
rain-curtailed thriller played at Antigua on 24th June 2024.
South
African captain Aiden Markram won the toss and decided to field first. Marco
Jansen provided a perfect start dismissing Shai Hope with a good catch by
Tristian Stubbs. Captain Markram struck on his first delivery dismissing
Nicolas Pooran with an easy catch to Jansen leaving West Indies in trouble.
Kyle Mayers and Chase steadied the ship for the hosts, taking singles and
hitting some lovely shots. West Indies scored 47 for 2.
Chase and
Mayers kept the momentum going for the West Indies. Shamsi got an important
breakthrough by dismissing Mayers with a good sharp catch by Stubbs. Chase and
Mayers added 81 runs for the 3rd wicket. Keshav Maharaj produced a
lovely delivery to dismiss West Indies captain Rovman Powell.
Chase
looked impressive with fifty off 39 deliveries. Shamsi dismissed Sherfane
Rutherford with a good catch by Markram to leave West Indies in big trouble at
94 for 5. He then struck again getting rid of Chase. Anrich Nortje produced a
superb direct hit to dismiss Russell. Rabada took a sharp return catch to get
rid of Akeal Hossein.
Gudakesh
Motie and Alazzari Joseph put on valuable runs for the 9th wicket
helping West Indies to post 135 for 8 in 20 overs. Shamsi was the pick of
bowlers with 3 for 27 while Jansen, Markram, Keshav Maharaj, and Rabada took 1
wicket each.
Chasing 136
runs to win, de Kock started positively in the first over smashing Akeal
Hossein for 3 boundaries in the first over. Andre Russell struck twice
dismissing Reeza Hendricks with a review for caught behind down the leg. The
umpire gave not out on review, it was overturned to out. He then struck de Kock
with a simple catch to Rutherford leaving South Africa in trouble.
After the
rain break, the target was revised to 123 in 17 overs. Stubbs and Markram steadied
the ship for South Africa with attacking strokes. Alazzari Joseph made an
important breakthrough by dismissing Markram. Klassen looked in impressive form
smashing Gudakesh Motie for 20 runs that changed the momentum.
Joseph
struck with a sharp bouncer to a stunning catch by Pooran getting rid of
Klassen. Klassen and Stubbs added 35 runs for the 4th wicket. There
was some disciplined bowling by West Indies bowlers. Chase got rid of David
Miller which the things very interesting.
South
Africa looked in a jittery mood losing the wickets of Stubbs and Keshav
Maharaj. Kagiso Rabada hit a lovely boundary to shift momentum in favor of
South Africa. Jansen hit a smacking six to help Proteas register a 3-wicket win
with 5 balls to spare.
For his 3
for 27 in 4 overs, Shamsi was named the player of the match award. South Africa
topped Group 2 and would face either India, Australia/Afghanistan in the
semi-finals.
