Paris Olympics 2024: Indian Men’s Hockey Register Thrilling Win Over New Zealand
The Indian
Men’s Hockey Team registered a thrilling win over New Zealand in the first
Group B match played in Paris on 27th July 2024.
It was an
ideal start for New Zealand Same Lane converted a penalty corner in the 8th
minute. Black Sticks dominated possession putting pressure on the Indian
defense. Indian team almost got a chance at the end of the first quarter but
could not convert it into a goal. At the end of the first quarter, New Zealand
led 1-0.
India
started the second quarter on an aggressive note, but New Zealand's defense was
strong enough. New Zealand was one player short due suspended for five minutes.
Harmanpreet Singh hit a lovely penalty corner but a rebound goal by Mandeep
Singh in the 24th minute to level the score at 1-1.
New Zealand
went with one player short again Huge Inglis was awarded a green card. It was a
great quarter for the Indian team as both teams ended at 1-1 at the end of the second
quarter.
Indian team
began the third quarter on an aggressive note, but Dixon saved multiple shots. A
great deflection by Vivek Sagar with a shot by Mandeep Singh in the 34th
minute gave Harmanpreet Singh a 2-1 lead. New Zealand reviewed the decision but
not overturned.
There were
superb efforts by both teams’ attackers, but the goalkeepers of both teams made
brilliant saves that denied them. New Zealand earned a fifth penalty corner,
but P Sreejesh produced another lovely save. At the end of the third quarter,
India still led 2-1.
Both teams
had great chances in the initial stages of the fourth quarter. New Zealand’s
Simon Child converted the second penalty corner in the 52nd minute
to level the scores at 2-2.
India got two
penalty corners out of which the second one was awarded a penalty stroke.
Harmanpreet Singh converted in the 59th minute to give a 3-2 lead.
New Zealand decided to take away the goalkeeper. India won a closely-fought encounter to start Group B on a winning note.
Belgium,
Australia, and India began their tournament on a winning note in their
respective Group B matches.
