Paris Olympics: All You Need To Know About India’s Schedule In Field Hockey

 

After securing a historic bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics, the Indian men’s hockey team would look to put on an excellent display during the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Singh, Indian men’s hockey qualified directly for the Paris Olympics after winning the gold medal in the 2022 Asian Games.

They have been clubbed with defending champions Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, and Ireland in Group B. With the way India performed against top teams, they will have a tough challenge against Belgium and Australia.

The Indian men’s hockey team will start their campaign against New Zealand on 27th July at Stade Yves du Mainor, Paris. It promises to be an exciting contest between these two teams as India defeated New Zealand during the Tokyo Olympics by a 3-2 margin.

After this, they will face Argentina in their second match on 29th July 2024. They defeated them during the previous edition of the Olympics with a 3-1 scoreline.

India will face Ireland in their 3rd match of the Group stage against Ireland on 30th July 2024. They are likely to defeat Ireland's team and move ahead in the competition.

Their toughest test would be against defending Champions Belgium on 1st August 2024. They suffered a 2-5 loss after staying in touch during the first three quarters.

India will end their Group stage against another bogey team Australia on 2nd August 2024. It promises to be an exciting contest between these two great hockey nations. Indian team suffered a demoralizing 1-7 loss in the Tokyo Olympics.

Indian Hockey Team For the Paris Olympics

The Indian men’s hockey team has a blend of youth and experience in their squad for the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Jarmanpreet Singh, Sanjay, Raj Kumar Pal, Abhishek, and Sukhjeet Singh would make their Olympic debut in Paris.

Harmanpreet Singh would lead the side and hope to showcase his penalty corner skills during the mega event.

The experienced PR Sreejesh would be the goalkeeper for the Indian team. Raj Kumar Pal, Shamsher Singh, Manpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, and Vivek Sagar Prasad will do the duties of midfielder.

Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, Mandeep Singh, and Gurjant Singh will look to score goals putting pressure on opponents’ defense.   

The defense would play a key role for India with Jarmanpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas, Harmanpreet Singh, Sumit and Sanjay.

They would be looking to prove their worth and win at least 3 matches to qualify for the quarterfinal stage.

Group A comprises of Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, hosts France, and South Africa.

The likes of the Netherlands, Germany, and Great Britain are likely to qualify for the quarterfinals while the spot for the fourth spot could be between Spain and France.
