Women’s Asia Cup 2024 2nd Semi-Finals: Sri Lanka Beat Pakistan In Thrilling Encounter
The Sri
Lankan Women’s team registered a thrilling victory over Pakistan in the 2nd
Semi-finals of the Asia Cup 2024 played in Dambulla on 26th July.
Sri Lankan captain
Chamari Atthaptu won the toss and decided to field first. Gull Feroza and
Muneeba Ali looked in positive touch keeping the scoreboard ticking with some shots
not allowing Lankan bowlers to settle. Pakistan openers made batting look easy
as they scored 45 runs at the end of the first six overs.
Prabodhani got
the breakthrough by dismissing Gull Feroza with a good catch by Fernando at
deep midwicket. Feroza and Muneeba Ali added 61 runs for the opening wicket. She
struck again in the same over to get rid of Muneeba Ali's shattering stumps.
Pakistan
captain Nida Dar looked in positive touch with some shots that kept the momentum
going. Dilhari struck twice getting wickets of Sidra Amin caught at short third
man and then got Dar. Dar and Amin added 30 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Fatima Sana
and Aliya Riaz showed intent in putting pressure on Sri Lankan bowling. Both
batters kept the momentum going for Pakistan with an unbeaten 41-run
partnership for the 5th wicket.
Chasing 141
runs to win, Sri Lanka got off to a worst possible start as Vishmi Gunaratne was
dismissed in the very first over by Saida Iqbal. Tuba Hassan dropped a tough
chance to get rid of Chamari. Harshita Samawickrama could not contribute much
dismissed cheaply.
Chamari
looked cautious along with Dilhari as Sri Lanka made 35 for 2 at the end of the
first six overs. The Lankan captain showed her class with big shots that made
life tough for Pakistan bowlers. Sadia Iqbal struck twice in one over
dismissing Dilhari and Nilashika Silva to bring back them into the game.
Dilhari and Chamari added 59 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Chamari
played with intent reaching fifty off 43 balls. Anushka Sanjeevani took
pressure off the Sri Lankan captain hitting some shots. Sadia Iqbal struck in her final over-dismissing
Chamari cleaned up. Chamari and Anushka added 42 runs for the 5th
wicket.
Sugandika
Kumari showed her composure with important runs. Pakistan had to be penalized for
slow over rate with 5 fielders inside the circle. Anushka hit the winning runs
to help Sri Lanka qualify for the finals with 1 ball to spare.
For her 63
off 48 balls, Chamari was named the player of the match award. This will be a rematch
of the 2022 edition of the Asia Cup.
