Women’s Asia Cup 2024: Indian Women Register Dominating Win Over UAE

 

The Indian women’s team continued their winning run as they thrashed UAE by 78 runs in their second group match played at Dambulla on 21st July 2024.

UAE captain Esha Oza won the toss and decided to field first. Shafali Varma looked in sublime touch putting bad deliveries away for boundaries keeping the scoreboard ticking. Kavisha Egodage struck getting rid of Smriti Mandhana caught by Rinitha Rajitha at mid-off.

Heena Hotchandani produced a lovely delivery to dismiss Dayalan Hemalatha. At the end of the first six overs, the Indian women scored 56 for 3.

Jemimah Rodrigues and captain Harmanpreet Kaur steadied the ship for the Indian team taking singles, hitting some lovely shots to keep the scoreboard ticking. Egodage struck to dismiss Rodrigues caught by Rajitha at mid-off. Rodrigues and Kaur added 54 runs for the 4th wicket.

Richa Ghosh played with intent keeping the scoreboard ticking smashing four boundaries against Esha Oza. Harmanpreet Kaur looked impressive with her shots, not allowing the UAE bowlers to settle. Kaur reached her 12th T20I fifty off 41 balls. UAE had to pay for a slow over rate with another fielder inside the circle.

Kaur was run out in the final over as Ghosh did not run. Kaur and Ghosh added 75 runs for the 5th wicket. Ghosh then took charge hitting boundaries from the next 5 deliveries. During the course, she completed her maiden T20I fifty off 26 balls. It was a superb batting effort as the Indian women’s team posted a mammoth total of 201 for 5 in 20 overs.

Chasing 202 runs to win, UAE batters struggled as Theertha Satish and Rinitha Ranjith fell in the first six overs as they made 31 on the board. After the field restrictions, Samaira perished when trying to hit a big shot that was caught by Tanuja Kanwar.

Captain Esha Oza looked impressive with her positive intent along with Kavisha. Oza was stumped by a lovely delivery by Kanwar. Oza and Kavisha put on 40 runs for the 4th wicket.

Kavisha Egodage provided some resistance as she remained not out on 40. Smriti Mandhana took charge as Harmanpreet Kaur went off the field.

UAE women finished on 123 for 7 in 20 overs. Deepti Sharma took 2 for 23 while Renuka Singh, Kanwar, Vastkar, and Radha Yadav took 1 wicket each.

For her unbeaten 64 off 29 balls, Richa Ghosh was named the player of the match award. India women’s team will face Nepal on 23rd July 2024.
