Women’s Asia Cup 2024 Match 2: Indian Team Starts the Tournament with A Bang
The defending
Champions India started the Asia Cup 2024 on a winning note against arch-rivals
Pakistan at Dambulla on 19th July.
Pakistan
captain Nida Dar won the toss and decided to bat first. Pooja Vastkar got the initial
breakthrough for India getting rid of Gull Feroza with a simple catch to Harmanpreet
Kaur. Sidra Amin and Muneeba Ali showed some intent before Vastkar dismissed Muneeba
Ali with a shorter delivery caught by Jemimah Rodrigues. Pakistan ended the
first six overs at 37 for 2.
Shreyanka
Patil showed her character by getting the wicket of Aliya Riaz with an easy
catch to Jemimah Rodrigues to leave Pakistan in some trouble. The Indian
bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals not allowing them to score
runs freely. Deepti Sharma dismissed Pakistan captain Nida Dar caught by Hemalatha
at long-on.
Renuka Singh
made an important breakthrough in getting rid of Sidra Amin. Fatima Sana and
Tuba Hassan put on some fight for Pakistan with some lovely strokes before
Deepti Sharma struck dismissing Tuba Hassan caught at backward point. Tuba and Fatima
added 31 runs for the 7th wicket. Fatima Sana provided some resistance for Pakistan
as Indian bowlers skittled them out cheaply for 108 in 19.2 overs. Deepti
Sharma took 3 wickets, and Pooja Vastkar, Renuka Singh, and Shreyanka Patil
grabbed 2 wickets each.
Chasing a modest
total of 109 runs to win, Shafali Varma looked in sublime touch putting
pressure on Pakistan with some silky shots. On the other hand, Smriti Mandhana
showed his intent to keep the momentum going for India. Indian openers raced
away to 57 for 0 in the first six overs.
Syed got
the opening breakthrough dismissing Smriti Mandhana caught by Aliya Riaz.
Mandhana and Varma added 85 runs for the opening wicket. It was a superb
batting effort by Indian batters as they chased down the target with 35 balls
to spare.
For her 3
for 20 in 4 overs, Deepti Sharma was named the player of the match award.
