Women's Asia Cup 2024: Thailand Begins The Tournament On A Winning Note

Thailand began the 2024 Women's Asia Cup on a winning note with an unbeaten streak against Malaysia at Dambulla on 20th July.

Thailand captain Thipatcha Putthawong won the toss and decided to bat first. It was an aggressive start as the experienced Boochatam began the opening over with 3 lovely boundaries to put pressure on the Malaysia bowlers. Subaika produced a peach to dismiss Chaihan.

Aaisya Eleesa struck in her first over dismissing Boochatam with a simple catch to Ismail. Nannapat Konchareonaki looked impressive putting the bad deliveries away for boundaries. At the end of the first six overs, Thailand made 44 for 2.

The off-spinner Ismail got rid of Thailand's captain Putthawong to put them under immense pressure. Maya and Nannapat steadied the ship for Thailand keeping the scoreboard ticking with singles and hitting boundaries. Ismail struck off successive deliveries to get rid of Nannapat and Sutthirung. Nannapat and Maya added 48 runs for the 4th wicket. Khiato and Kanoh put on some valuable runs, in the end, to help Thailand post a competitive total of 133 for 6. Ismail was the pick of bowlers with 3 for 16 in 4 overs.

Chasing 134 runs to win, Wan Julia and Malaysian captain Durasingham looked in good touch against disciplined Thailand bowling. Julia kept the scoreboard ticking with positive strokes keeping momentum going for Malaysia. Malaysia made 36 runs at the end of the first six overs.

After the field restrictions, Julia and Durasingham kept the momentum going for Malaysia keeping their hopes alive of winning. Kampchomphu got the breakthrough by dismissing Durasingham. Julia and Durasingham added 68 runs for the opening wicket.

Malaysia kept losing wickets at regular intervals while Julia remained steady with a half-century off 50 balls. Julia was run out while attempting the second runout to derail Malaysia’s hopes of winning. Malaysia made 111 for 8 in 20 overs falling short by 22 runs.
