Eng vs SL 1st 2nd Day: Match Hangs In The Balance

 

The 2nd day of the 1st test match between England and Sri Lanka hangs in the balance after a good contest between bat and ball at Old Trafford, Manchester on 22nd August 2024.

The first session of the day did not take place due to heavy rains. There was action immediately as Ashita Fernando got rid of Lawrence, the decision was overturned as the ball was going above the stumps. Fernando then dismissed Duckett via review. Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva reviewed the decision and was overturned to out.

Right-arm pace bowler Fernando produced a peach to dismiss Ollie Pope leaving England in some trouble. Vishwa struck getting rid of Lawrence caught by Dinesh Chandimal. Harry Brook and Joe Root showed intent keeping the scoreboard ticking not allowing the Sri Lankan bowlers to settle. Ashita Fernando was introduced into the attack and produced another lovely delivery getting rid of Joe Root caught by Chandimal. Root and Brook added 58 runs for the 4th wicket.

Harry Brook maintained the momentum along with Jamie Smith. Both kept the scoreboard ticking to ensure that England put pressure on Sri Lankan bowlers. Brook looked in complete control, reaching fifty off 59 deliveries. England went into the tea break at 176 for 4.

Soon after the tea break, Prabath Jayasuriya produced a peach to dismiss Brook. Brook and Smith added 62 runs for the 5th wicket. Chris Woakes joined Jamie Smith keeping the momentum going on. Smith maintained his consistent run so far with fifty off 81 deliveries.

Prabath Jayasuriya stunned Chris Woakes with another beauty to give Sri Lanka the breakthrough. Woakes and Smith added 52 runs for the 6th wicket. The umpires asked the Sri Lankan captain to bowl spinners.

Jamie Smith kept the scoreboard ticking against the spinners. Ashita Fernando was brought into attack before a little rain arrived. England ended the second day on 259 for 6 with a lead of 23 runs.

England 259 for 6 in 61 overs (Jamie Smith 72*, Harry Brook 56, Asitha Fernando 3/68, Prabath Jayasuriya 2/58) lead Sri Lanka 236 in 74 overs (Dhananjaya de Silva 74, Milne Rathnayake 72, Chris Woakes 3/32, Shoaib Bashir 3/55) by 23 runs.








England ends day 2 at 259 for 6 with a lead of 23 runs against Sri Lanka
