Eng vs SL 1st Test 1st Day: Great Fightback By Dhananjaya and Rathnayake
Thanks to
brilliant knocks by Dhananjaya de Silva and Rathnayake, Sri Lanka recovered
from a tough situation against England on the first day of the first Test match
at Old Trafford, Manchester on 21st August 2024.
Sri Lankan
captain Dhananjaya de Silva won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not
an ideal start for the visitors as Dimuth Karaunate was dismissed caught by
Jamie Smith. Chris Woakes produced two lovely deliveries getting wickets of Madushka
and Mathews in the same over to leave Sri Lanka struggling at 6 for 3.
Kusal
Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal steadied the ship for Sri Lanka with some positive
strokes keeping the scoreboard ticking. Mark Wood produced sharp delivery
hitting the gloves straight into slips hands. Kusal and Chandimal added 34 runs
for the 4th wicket.
Dinesh
Chandimal and Dhanjaya de Silva looked in decent touch. Right before the end of
the first session, Shoaib Bashir dismissed Chandimal which kept low. Sri Lanka looked
in deep trouble at 80 for 5 at the end of the first session.
It was
another shaky start as Sri Lanka lost the wicket of Kamindu Mendis dismissed by
Chris Woakes to leave them in dire trouble at 92 for 6. Gus Atkinson got rid of
Prabath Jayasuriya with a no-ball before dismissing him again in the same over.
Dhananjaya de Silva looked in brilliant touch keeping the scoreboard ticking
along with debutant Milne Rathnayake.
Dhananjaya de
Silva reached fifty off just 56 deliveries. Rathnayake remained solid with his
defensive technique while the captain showed his class by playing attacking
shots. Right at the stroke of tea break, Dhananjaya de Silva was dismissed with
a good catch by Lawrence at leg slip. Dhananjaya de Silva and Rathnayake added
65 runs for the 8th wicket. At the end of 2nd session,
Sri Lanka scored 178 for 8.
The third
session saw the debutant Rathnayake providing resistance keeping strike with
him for most of the deliveries. Vishwa Fernando looked solid playing defensive technique.
Rathnayake reached his maiden fifty off 96 deliveries with a six. His brilliant
innings came to an end with a simple catch to Chris Woakes at the boundary. Rathyanke
and Fernando added 50 runs for the 9th wicket.
Vishwa
Fernando ran out while trying to take a single. Sri Lanka recovered
from 113 for 7 to 236 all out.
The Sri
Lankan spin duo of Dhananjaya and Prabath Jayasuriya had to bowl bad light.
Ben Duckett and Lawrence scored 22 at the end of 4 overs.
