Eng vs SL 1st Test 3rd Day: Great Day Of Test Cricket

It was a great day of test cricket between England and Sri Lanka on the 3rd day of the 1st match of the series played at Old Trafford, Manchester on 23rd August 2024.

Starting on the overnight score of 259 for 6, Jamie Smith showed intent against poor bowling by Lankan bowlers. Gus Atkinson provided great support hitting boundaries and taking singles with ease. Smith kept the scoreboard ticking, reaching his maiden Test century off 136 balls. Soon after, Rathnayake grabbed his maiden wicket getting rid of Atkinson down the leg catch by Chandimal. Smith and Atkinson added 66 runs for the 7th wicket.

Prabath Jayasuriya struck dismissing Jamie Smith with a sharp catch by Chandimal to end a brilliant 111 runs knock. Dhananjaya de Silva took the second new ball immediately. The decision did not yield much as Mark Wood hit some valuable runs keeping the lead grower higher. Ashita Fernando shattered the stumps getting rid of Mark Wood. Wood and Potts added 33 runs for the 9th wicket. Vishwa Fernando ended England’s innings by dismissing Potts with a simple catch to Kamindu Mendis bundling out England for 358 with a big lead of 122 runs.

It was not an ideal start for the Sri Lankan team in the 2nd innings. Nishan Madushka was dismissed in the very first over. Atkinson produced a lovely delivery to dismiss Kusal Mendis leaving Sri Lanka struggling at 1 for 2. The experienced duo of Dimuth Karaunate and Mathews took the visitors with the scoreboard reading 10 at lunch.

After the lunch break, Dimuth and Mathews steadied the ship for Sri Lankan team keeping the scoreboard ticking with some lovely shots. Mark Wood did the damage by getting rid of Karaunate caught by Brook at slips. Karaunate and Mathews added 51 runs for the 3rd wicket. Dinesh Chandimal went off the field after being hit by Mark Wood on the thumb. Dhananjaya de Silva luck was not there as Potts delivery was low.
