Eng vs SL 1st Test: England Wins First Test Match
The England
Cricket Team registered a close-fought 5-wicket win in the first test match
against the spirited Sri Lankan team played at Old Trafford, Manchester on 24th
August 2024.
Chasing
down 205 runs to win, Ben Duckett and Dan Lawrence began off to a positive start
before Duckett was dismissed by a lovely delivery from Ashita Fernando. Duckett
and Lawrence added 34 runs for the opening wicket.
Ollie Pope’s
struggle continued in the 2nd innings also dismissed by Prabath
Jayasuriya caught by Dhananjaya de Silva. Lawrence looked impressive before being
trapped in front of the wicket by Rathnayake. Joe Root showed his composure along
with Harry Brook.
After the tea
break, Root and Brook steadied the ship for England. Harry Brook provided a simple
return catch to Prabath Jayasuriya to give Sri Lanka some hope of winning. Root
and Brook added 49 runs for the 4th wicket. Root looked steady keeping
the strike rotating while Jamie Smith showed intent with some lovely strokes
against Lankan bowlers.
Ashita
Fernando produced a lovely delivery to dismiss Jamie Smith. Smith and Root put
on 64 runs for the 5th wicket. Root remained calm, reaching fifty
off 108 deliveries. Root hit the winning runs with a boundary to register an impressive
win.
It was a
great performance by the England team after being in trouble on both occasions.
For his 111 and 39, Jamie Smith was named the player of the match.
England
takes a 1-0 lead in the 3-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Both teams now
will head to Lords, London for the 2nd match to be played from 29th
August onwards.

overs (Kamindu Mendis 113, Dinesh Chandimal 79, Chris Woakes 3/58, Potts 3/47)
by 5 wickets.
