Eng vs SL 2nd Test 1st Day: Joe Root’s Century Puts England In Strong Position
England
ended the first day of the 2nd test match against Sri Lanka in a
strong position at Lords, London on 29th August 2024.
Sri Lankan
captain Dhananjaya de Silva won the toss and decided to bowl first. It was an
ideal start for the visitors as Ashita Fernando and Rathyanke struggled against
Duckett and Lawrence. Lahiru Kumara struck in his first over dismissing
Lawrence with a beauty. Lawrence and Duckett added 33 runs for the opening
wicket.
Ashita
Fernando got rid of England captain Ollie Pope trying to hit a big shot caught
by Dhananjaya de Silva at square leg. Kumara bowled with great control
troubling the England batters. Root survived a close LBW shout given not out on the umpire’s call.
Root looked
in good touch with some lovely shots. Duckett perished trying to hit a reverse
sweep straight into the hands of Kumara. Root and Duckett added 40 runs for the
3rd wicket. Harry Brook and Root remained cautious as England went
into the lunch break at 97 for 3.
Harry Brook
and Root started the second session brightly with good shots. Ashita Fernando
trapped Harry Brook in front of the wickets. Brook reviewed the decision, and the
decision was retained due to the umpire’s call. Brook and Root added 48 runs
for the 4th wicket. Root looked solid, reaching fifty off 84 balls. Root
and Smith kept the scoreboard ticking as Prabath Jayasuriya bowled with discipline
lines.
Right
before the tea break, Rathyanke dismissed Jamie Smith with a simple catch to
Madushka. Root and Smith added 62 runs for the 5th wicket.
England ended the second session at 200 for 5.
Lahiru
Kumara got rid of Chris Woakes with a short delivery leaving England in trouble
at 216 for 6. Gus Atkinson showed intent against Lankan bowlers, especially Prabath
Jayasuriya. Joe Root reached his 33rd Test century off 162 balls.
Root and Atkinson took the attack against Kamindu Mendis keeping the scoreboard
ticking.
Atkinson
looked in sublime touch with attacking shots keeping Sri Lanka on the back foot.
Root tried to hit a reverse scoop but provided a simple catch to Nissanka. Root
and Atkinson added 92 runs for the 7th wicket.
Atkinson
looked confident with maiden Test fifty off 61 balls. Lankan captain Dhananjaya
de Silva took the 2nd new ball immediately before Atkinson and
Matthew Potts produced some lovely shots. England ended the first day at 358
for 7.
