Eng vs SL 2nd Test 2nd Day: England In A Commanding Position
England continued
their domination with a superb performance at the end of day 2 against Sri
Lanka at Lords, London on 30th August 2024.
Starting on
the overnight score of 358 for 7, Gus Atkinson began the day with 2 boundaries
in the first over. He was given out by the umpire; on review, it was overturned
to not out missing leg stump. Ashita Fernando got their first breakthrough by dismissing
Ollie Pope with a simple catch to Madushka. Atkinson and Pope added 85 runs for
the 8th wicket.
Gus Atkinson
completed his maiden Test century off 103 balls. Atkinson showed intent to keep
the scoreboard ticking along with Olly Stone. A stunning piece of catch by Rathyanke
ended the innings of Atkinson for 118. Ashita Fernando took his 5th
wicket by getting rid of Olly Stone with a good catch by Kamindu Mendis to be
bowled out for 427.
In reply,
Dimuth Karaunate and Nishan Madushka began off to a positive start. Madushka was
given a reprieve as the catch dropped between Root and Smith. Chris Woakes got
the breakthrough dismissing Madushka taking the inside edge onto the stumps.
Olly Stone dismissed
Dimuth Karaunate taking an inside edge onto the stumps. Sri Lanka ended the
first session at 32 for 2. Stone struck again in his first over after lunch
break getting rid of Nissanka caught by Potts at leg slip. Mathews and Dinesh
Chandimal looked solid against disciplined England bowling keeping the
scoreboard ticking.
Matthew Potts
struck twice off successive deliveries dismissing Mathews and Dhananjaya de
Silva. Mathews and Chandimal added 48 runs for the 4th wicket. Atkinson
produced another wicket getting rid of Dinesh Chandimal caught by Lawrence to
leave Lanka in trouble at 87 for 6.
Milne Rathyanke
showed intent with some lovely shots along with Kamindu Mendis. Chris Woakes
struck to dismiss Rathyanke caught by Smith. Kamindu and Rathyanke added 31
runs for the 7th wicket. Sri Lanka ended the 2nd session
in big trouble at 129 for 7.
Kamindu
Mendis looked impressive with defensive and attacking skills keeping pressure
on England bowlers. Prabath Jayasuriya resistance ended by trying to hit a big
shot against Bashir. Jayasuriya and Mendis added 35 runs for the 8th
wicket.
Kamindu
showed intent to keep the strike for most of the deliveries while Lahiru Kumara
looked solid with his defensive technique. Mendis reached fifty off 103
deliveries and then attacked the England bowlers with a flurry of boundaries.
Ollie Pope produced a direct hit to dismiss Kumara. Kumara faced 22 deliveries
for his 0. Kamindu and Kumara added 42 runs for the 9th wicket.
Mendis was the last batter dismissed for a well-made 74. England bundled out
Sri Lanka for 196 and decided not to enforce the follow-on.
England
began the second innings off brightly with Duckett and Lawrence hitting some
lovely shots. Kumara struck by dismissing Lawrence with a review for being
caught behind. The umpire called not out; on review, it was overturned to out. Pope
survived a few anxious moments as England ended day 2 on 25 for 1 with a lead
of 256 runs.

in 102 overs ( Joe Root 143, Gus Atkinson 118, Ashita Fernando 5/102) and 25
for 1 in 7 overs ( Duckett 15*, Kumara 1/10) lead Sri Lanka 196 in 55.3 overs (
Kamindu Mendis 74, Potts 2/19, Woakes 2/21) by 256 runs.
England ended the 2nd day of 2nd Test against Sri Lanka in a commanding position
