Asian Champions Trophy 2024- India Register Close Fought Win
The Indian
men’s hockey team defended their title with a narrow 1-0 win in the finals of
the 2024 Asian Champions Trophy played at Hulunbir, Inner Mongolia on 17th
September.
Indian team
began the first quarter on a good note with aggressive moves, but the Chinese
looked solid to deny them any goals. India earned two penalty corners as the second
shot by Harmanpreet Singh went wide off the goal post. Wang produced a superb save
to deny India the goal. China earned their first penalty corner which was well
saved by Krishna Pathak before it was cleared by Jarmanpreet Singh. At the end
of the first quarter, the score remained 0-0. The Chinese defense looked solid
and did not allow any chances to convert.
The second
quarter did not start well for India as Raheel was awarded a green card. Both
teams tried their best to attack, but the defense looked strong, not allowing
any goals. India earned a penalty corner as Harmanpreet Singh’s shot hit the
goalpost not going in. India was awarded a penalty stroke, the Chinese reviewed,
and the decision was overturned. At the end of the 1st half, the score
remained still 0-0. Chinese defense looked strong as they put some pressure on
Indian attackers.
Indian team
began the third quarter on a positive note with good moves, but the Chinese
defense looked strong. China earned two back-to-back penalty corners, with the Indian
goalkeeper producing a superb save. The hosts earned another penalty corner,
but this time Amit Rohidas cleared it. Amir Ali was awarded a 2-minute suspension.
At the end of the third quarter, the score remained 0-0.
It was
another great start for the defending champions, India in the fourth quarter
with aggressive moves. Harmanpreet Singh led from the front with a superb pass
to Jugraj who converted it into a goal in the 51st minute giving a
1-0 lead.
China
decided to bring out the goalkeeper with 11 outfield players. It was a superb
effort by the Indian defense as they did not allow any goals. The defending
champions India eked out a 1-0 win.
It was an
impressive performance by the Chinese defense in the finals before a superb
piece of play by Harmanpreet Singh and Jugraj combination led India to defend
the title.
