Eng vs SL 3rd Test: Sri Lanka Stun England In The Third Test
The Sri
Lankan Cricket Team stunned hosts England in the 3rd test match at
Kennington Oval, London on 9th September 2024.
Starting on
the overnight score of 94 for 1, Sri Lanka began off positively with Pathum
Nissanka and Kusal Mendis showing intent to keep the scoreboard ticking. Gus Atkinson
grabbed the wicket of Kusal Mendis with a stunning catch by Shoaib Bashir. Both
Lankan batters added 69 runs for the 2nd wicket.
The experienced
Angelo Mathews struggled against disciplined England bowling against swinging
conditions. Pathum Nissanka looked confident with lovely shots keeping the
momentum going for Sri Lanka. After the initial struggle, Mathews played with aggression,
taking singles and hitting boundaries easily.
Nissanka
looked comfortable against the England bowlers reaching his century off 107
deliveries. After his century, he played with attacking intent hitting big
shots against Olly Stone. It was a superb batting display by Nissanka and
Mathews making sure that Sri Lanka ended the test series with a commanding 8-wicket
win. Nissanka and Mathews put on an unbeaten 111 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Nissanka hit the winning runs with a boundary that helped the visitors
register their fourth victory on England soil in 21 test matches.
For his 64
and unbeaten 127, Pathum Nissanka was named the player of the match. For his
375 runs, Joe Root was named the player of the series.
Sri Lanka
gave a tough fight in the first test match at Old Trafford, Manchester by 5
wickets. The second match at Lords was a disappointing performance as Sri Lanka
conceded 427 runs in the first innings. In their first innings, Lanka posted
just 196.
Chasing a
massive total of 483 runs in the fourth, Sri Lanka made 292 runs losing the
match by 190 runs.
Sri Lanka
263 in 61.2 overs (Dhananjaya de Silva 69*, Kamindu Mendis 64, Stone 3/35, Hull
3/53) and 219 for 2 in 40.3 overs (Nissanka 129*, Mathews 32*, Woakes 1/32)
beat England 325 in 69.1 overs (Ollie Pope 154, Duckett 86, Rathyanke 3/56,
Vishwa Fernando 2/46) and 156 in 34 overs (Jamie Smith 67, Kumara 4/21, Vishwa
Fernando 3/40) by 8 wickets.
