SL vs NZ 1st Test 2nd Day: New Zealand Batters Showed Class
The
visiting New Zealand team ended rain-curtailed 2nd day against Sri
Lanka in a good position played at Galle International Stadium, Galle on 19th
September 2024.
Starting on
the overnight score of 302 for 7, Sri Lanka got off to worst possible start with
Prabath Jayasuriya gone in front of the stumps before rain stopped play. After
the rain delay, the hosts lost two more wickets to be bundled out for 305 in
the first innings. Tom Latham and Devon Conway scored 5 runs before the rain
stopped play again. With lots of rain coming, umpires called the lunch break.
Conway and
Latham looked in good touch keeping the scoreboard ticking. After the initial
burst, de Silva brought Ramesh Mendis and Jayasuriya into the attack. Both NZ
batters kept the scoreboard ticking. Ramesh Mendis struck getting the opening
wicket by dismissing Conway. The umpires called not out; on review it was
overturned to out by hitting in front of the stumps. Conway and Latham added 63
runs for the opening wicket.
The
experienced Kane Williamson looked in good touch right from the word go while
Latham swept the spinners brilliantly keeping the momentum going for visitors.
Latham looked in good touch, reaching his fifty of 69 deliveries. Right before
the stroke of tea break, Prabath Jayasuriya struck getting the wicket of Latham
caught by substitute Sadeera Samawickrama. Latham and Williamson put on 73 runs
for the 2nd wicket.
Kane
Williamson and Rachin Ravindra played the Lankan spin duo brilliantly keeping
the scoreboard ticking. Williamson completed fifty off 87 balls to keep New
Zealand on the front foot. Dhananjaya struck with a golden arm dismissing
Williamson with a good catch by Kusal Mendis. Williamson and Ravindra added 51
runs for the 3rd wicket. De Silva struck again to dismiss Ravindra
with beauty.
Tom
Blundell and Mitchell looked like they were in a positive mood against the
Lankan bowlers. Both ensured that NZ kept the scoreboard ticking. Blundell and
Mitchell helped the visitors end day 2 on 255 for 4. Both added 59 runs for the
5th wicket.
New Zealand
255 for 4 in 72 overs (Latham 70, Williamson 55, Dhananjaya de Silva 2/31)
trail Sri Lanka 305 in 91.5 overs (Kamindu Mendis 114, Kusal Mendis 50, Rourke
5/55) by 50 runs.
