Sri Lanka Register Fourth Test Victory On England Soil
The Sri
Lankan Cricket Team registered their fourth test win on England soil. Under the
captaincy of Dhananjaya de Silva, Sri Lanka stunned with a dominating 8-wicket
win over hosts England in the 3rd test match at Kennington Oval, London
on 9th September 2024.
Here we look at Sri Lanka's Four Test Wins On England Soil.
Sri Lanka First
Test Win (1998)
Their
performances in Test matches on England soil have been disappointing. Under the
captaincy of Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka registered a dominating 10-wicket win
at Kennington Oval, London from 27th-31st August 1998.
It was an
impressive performance by the Lankan team. England scored 445 runs in their
first innings as Muttiah Muralitharan picked 7 for 155 in 59.3. In reply, Sri
Lankan batters made a superb impression scoring 591 on the board. Sanath
Jayasuriya scored 213, Aravinda de Silva 153 &Suresh Perera scored 43 which
helped the visitors post a mammoth total.
Muralitharan
rattled the England innings picking 9 for 65 bundling them out for 181 in the
second innings. Sri Lanka chased down the target of 37 runs without losing any
wickets to register their first test victory on England soil.
Sri Lanka
Second Test Win (2006)
Sri Lanka
registered their second test win on England soil at Trent Bridge, Nottingham from
2nd June 2006 onwards. Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayewardene won the
toss and decided to bat first. It was a disappointing batting performance by
the visitors as they only scored 231. Chaminda Vaas was the top scorer with 38
while Upul Tharanga (34), Sangakkara (34).
Sri Lankan
bowlers made a strong comeback on the 2nd day as they bundled out England
for 241 conceding 2 run lead. Muralitharan took 3 wickets, Chaminda Vaas,
Malinga & Sanath Jayasuriya took 2 wickets each.
Sri Lanka’s
batting impressed in the 2nd innings posting 322 runs. Kumar Sangakkara
finished as the top scorer with 66 while valuable contributions from Tharanga,
Mahela Jayewardene, TM Dilshan, Kapudgera &Vaas ensured that they set a
challenging target for England.
Sri Lanka
set up a target of 325 runs in the fourth innings. Muralitharan ripped apart
the England batting line-up grabbing 8 for 70 in 30 overs to help Lanka a 134
runs victory.
Sri Lanka’s
Third Test Win (2014)
Sri Lanka’s
last test victory came on England soil at Headingly, Leeds on 20th June
onwards. It was a disappointing batting performance in the first innings by
Lanka as they posted just 257 runs in the first innings.
In reply, England
took a lead of 108 runs in the first innings as they made 365 runs. Sri Lanka
fought back strongly in the second innings smashing 457 runs. The experienced Mathews
played a gem of a knock with 160 while the rest of the other Lankan batters
contributed which led Lanka to post a challenging target.
The match
went right down the wire with Eranga dismissing James Anderson with 1 ball to
spare helping Lanka register 100 runs win and seal a famous 1-0 series win as
the first match at Lords ended in a draw.
Sri Lanka’s
Fourth Test Win (2024)
Sri Lanka
registered a famous win over hosts England in the 3rd Test match at
Kennington Oval, London on 6th September 2024.
Dhananjaya de
Silva won the toss and decided to field first. It was a disappointing outing on
the first day as they gave away 221 for 3 on a curtailed rainy first day. Sri
Lankan bowlers made a strong comeback bundling out England for 325 after being
261 for 3.
Nissanka
looked in a good touch scoring 64. Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at regular intervals
before Kamindu Mendis and Dhananjaya put on an excellent partnership for the 6th
wicket. Both Lankan batters scored half-centuries that rescued to post 263 runs.
It was a
great bowling effort by Lankan bowlers especially Lahiru Kumara with 4 wickets,
Vishwa Fernando 3, Ashita Fernando 2 & Rathnayake 1 to bundle out England
for just 156.
Chasing 219
runs to win, Nissanka looked in sublime touch with attacking shots keeping the
momentum going. It was a dominating performance as they chased down the highest
successful total by an Asian Team in Test matches on England soil.
