IND vs NZ 1st Test 2nd Day: New Zealand In A Commanding Position

 

The New Zealand Cricket Team put on an excellent display with both bowl and bat to be in a commanding position against the hosts India of the 2nd day played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on 17th October 2024.

After the first day was washed out due to rain, Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first on overcast conditions. Mat Henry and Tim Southee troubled Indian openers Yashavi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma. Rohit Sharma survived a close LBW shout given not out, on review it was retained as not out due to the umpire’s call. Southee produced a delivery to dismiss Rohit Sharma.

William O Rourke was bought into the attack and dismissed Virat Kohli with a sharp catch by Glenn Phillps at leg slip. Devon Conway took a one-handed catch to dismiss Sarfaraz Khan at mid-off to leave India in deep trouble. With the scoreboard reading 13 for 3, the rain arrived.

After the rain break, Tom Blundell dropped a sitter to dismiss Pant. New Zealand seamers troubled the Indian batters with pace and bounce. O Rourke struck to get rid of Yashasvi Jaiswal with a good catch by Ajaz Patel at backward point. Rourke dismissed KL Rahul down the leg leaving the Indian team in deep trouble. Matt Henry showed his class with another lovely delivery to dismiss Ravindra Jadeja. India went into the lunch break in dire trouble at 34 for 6.

Right after the lunch break, New Zealand pacers created havoc with wickets at regular intervals. It was a sensational bowling effort as Kiwis bundled out India for 46. Matt Henry took 5 wickets, O Rourke 4 and Southee took 1 wicket.

In reply, Devon Conway looked confident against the Indian bowlers showing intent by keeping the scoreboard ticking. KL Rahul missed a golden chance to get rid of Latham as the ball went between him and Kohli. Kuldeep Yadav provided a much-needed wicket to dismiss Latham. The umpire gave not out, on review it was overturned to out. Latham and Conway added 67 runs for the opening wicket. New Zealand went into the tea break at 82 for 1.

After the tea break, Young and Conway showed intent against the Indian spinners. Conway completed his fifty off 54 deliveries to keep the scoreboard ticking. Young survived a LBW call, given out by the umpire, on review it was overturned to not out hitting inside edge. Right before the drinks break, Ravindra Jadeja struck getting rid of Young caught by Kuldeep Yadav at short fine leg. Young and Conway added 75 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Pant went off the field as the ball hit the shin. Dhruv Jurel came as a replacement for Pant. Ashwin struck in his first over of his next spell dismissing Conway trying to hit a reverse sweep. Rachin Ravindra looked confident with his strokes while Mitchell struggled initially. New Zealand went into stumps at 180 for 3.

New Zealand 180 for 3 in 50 overs (Conway 91, Ravindra Jadeja 1/28) lead India 46 in 31.2 overs (Pant 20, Henry 5/15, Rourke 4/22) by 134 runs.
