Ind vs NZ 2nd Test 1st Day: Honors Even
The first
day of the 2nd test match saw some exciting battles between bat and
ball played at MCA Stadium, Pune on 24th October 2024.
New Zealand
captain Tom Latham won the toss and decided to bat first. Tom Latham and Devon
Conway began off to a steady start against Akashdeep Singh while Jasprit Bumrah
bowled decent lines and lengths. R Ashwin struck in his first over getting rid
of New Zealand captain Latham with a lovely delivery. Latham and Conway added
32 runs for the opening wicket.
Will Young
looked solid with his defense while Conway showed good intent against the
Indian spinners. Both batters kept the scoreboard ticking. R Ashwin struck with
a review for being caught behind down the leg. The umpires called not out; it
was overturned to out hitting the gloves. Young and Conway added 44 runs for
the 2nd wicket. Rachin Ravindra and Conway showed intent with
attacking shots keeping the scoreboard ticking. New Zealand went into the lunch
break at 92 for 2.
After the
lunch break, Conway looked confident, reaching fifty off 109 deliveries. Rachin
Ravindra and Conway kept the scoreboard ticking, taking singles and hitting occasional
boundaries. R Ashwin struck with his third wicket dismissing Conway with a
sharp catch by Pant. Conway and Rachin Ravindra put on 62 runs for the 3rd
wicket.
Rachin
Ravindra showed his intent by keeping the scoreboard ticking while Mitchell
struggled against disciplined Indian bowling. Rachin made the batting look easy,
reaching fifty off 93 deliveries. Sundar bowled a peach to dismiss well-set
Rachin Ravindra to break 59 runs stand for the 4th wicket. At the
stroke of tea break, Sundar struck again getting rid of Tom Blundell with beauty.
New Zealand ended the second session at 201 for 5.
It was
another great start for India in the 3rd session as Sundar struck
again to dismiss Mitchell. The umpire called not out; on review it was
overturned to out. Glenn Phillips struggled against the Indian bowlers while
Mitchell Santer showed intent.
Sundar got
rid of Glenn Phillips with an easy catch to R Ashwin at long-off. Phillips and
Santer added 32 runs for the 7th wicket. Sundar was superb by dismissing
Southee &Ajaz. He then picked the wicket of Santer with a peach to finish with
figures of 7 for 59. India bundled out New Zealand for 259.
In reply,
it was not an ideal start for the hosts as Rohit Sharma was cleaned up by Tim
Southee. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill looked cautious as India ended the
first day on 16 for 1.
