IND vs NZ 2nd Test 2nd Day: New Zealand In A Strong Position

 

New Zealand proved their worth as they ended the 2nd day in a strong position against hosts India played at MCA Stadium, Pune on 25th October 2024.

Starting on the overnight score of 16 for 1, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal looked cautious against Mitchell Santer. Gill survived a close LBW shout given not out by the umpire, on review it was retained due to the umpire’s call. Santer then got rid of Gill with a similar delivery. Gill and Jaiswal put on 49 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Santer got rid of Virat Kohli with a full toss delivery leaving India in trouble. Glenn Phillips was bought into the attack and got rid of Jaiswal with a good catch by Mitchell at slips. Pant looked in decent touch while Sarfaraz struggled against the New Zealand bowlers. Phillips struck again dismissing Pant shattering the stumps. Santer then deceived Sarfaraz Khan providing a simple catch to O Rourke at mid-off leaving India in deep trouble.

Santer produced another superb delivery dismissing R Ashwin that kept low. India ended the first session in big trouble at 107 for 7. Ravindra Jadeja survived a few anxious moments before showing some intent against Santer and Co. Jadeja and Sundar added 33 runs for the 8th wicket. Santer dismissed Jadeja to leave the hosts in deep trouble. Sundar showed some intent with lusty hits keeping the scoreboard ticking. Santer dismissed Akashdeep and Bumrah in quick succession to bundle out India for 156.

Devon Conway and Tom Latham showed intent right from the word go against Ashwin keeping the scoreboard ticking. Both batters looked impressive coming down the track and hitting boundaries with ease. Sundar got the breakthrough dismissing Conway who did not take the review. Conway and Latham added 36 runs for the opening wicket.

Will Young showed intent against the Indian spinners with innovative shots. Tom Latham also looked impressive keeping the momentum going. Ashwin got the wicket dismissing Young with a lovely delivery. Young and Latham put on 42 runs for the 2nd wicket. New Zealand scored 85 for 2 at the end of 2nd session.

It was an ideal start for India in the third session as Sundar shattered the stumps of Rachin Ravindra. Daryl Mitchell played attacking shots putting Indian spinners under pressure. Latham looked impressive, reaching his fifty of 82 deliveries. Sundar struck again getting rid of Mitchell caught by Jaiswal at long-on. Mitchell and Latham added 34 runs for the 4th wicket.

Tom Latham and Tom Blundell showed intent to keep the scoreboard ticking, hitting boundaries with ease and rotating the strike. Sundar got a big wicket of NZ captain Latham for well made 86. Latham and Blundell added 60 runs for the 5th wicket. Phillips and Blundell ensured that NZ ended the 2nd day at 198 for 5 with a lead of 301 runs.

New Zealand 259 in 79.1 overs ( Conway 76, Rachin Ravindra 65, Sundar 7/59, Ashwin 3/64) lead 198 for 5 in 53 overs ( Latham 86, Sundar 4/57)  India 156 in 45.3 overs (Ravindra Jadeja 38, Mitchell Santer 7/53) by 301 runs.
