IND W vs NZ W 1st ODI: Indian Team Starts With A Resounding Win
The Indian
Women’s team started the ODI series with a resounding win against White Ferns
played at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on 24th October 2024.
Indian
stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana won the toss and decided to bat first. It was
not an ideal start for the hosts as Mandhana was dismissed providing an easy
catch to Plimmer at backward point. Shafali Varma showed intent right from the
word go putting pressure on the White Ferns bowling.
Shafali
Varma looked in sublime touch keeping the scoreboard ticking along with Yastika
Bhatia. Varma’s excellent innings ended with a simple catch to Halliday at square
leg. Varma and Bhatia added 37 runs for the 2nd wicket. Carson
struck again getting rid of Dayalan Hemalatha to leave the Indian team in
trouble.
Yastika
Bhatia was looking good before providing an easy catch to Carson at deep square
leg to leave the hosts in trouble. Tejal Hasabins made her debut looked showed
intent along with Jemimah Rodrigues. Rodrigues and Hasabins kept the scoreboard
ticking, making life tough for the Ferns bowlers.
Suzie Bates
provided a much-needed breakthrough dismissing Rodrigues hitting in front of
the stumps. Rodrigues and Hasabins put on 61 runs for the 5th
wicket. Deepti Sharma steadied the ship along with Hasabins keeping scoreboard
ticking. Hasabins could not resist coming down the track stumped by Gaze.
Deepti
Sharma showed intent to keep the momentum going along with Arundhati Reddy.
Reddy perished providing an easy catch to Hannah Rowe. It was a good
partnership as Deepti and Reddy added 37 runs for the 7th wicket.
The Indian team could not play the full quota of 50 overs as they made 227 in
44.3 overs.
Saima
Thakor got her debut international wicket by dismissing Suzie Bates with a good
return catch. Plimmer and Lauren Down looked impressive keeping the scoreboard
ticking along.
Deepti
Sharma took a good return catch to dismiss Plimmer. Plimmer and Down added 33
runs for the 2nd wicket. At the end of 10 overs, White Ferns scored
40 for 2.
Sophie
Devine was dismissed via run out with presence of mind by Deepti Sharma and
Yastika Bhatia leaving the visitors in trouble. Halliday steadied the ship
along with Down maintaining pressure on Indian bowlers. Radha Yadav struck to
get rid of Down as Hasabins took a good catch at mid-off. Halliday and Down
added 33 runs for the 4th wicket.
Halliday
and Maddy Green steadied the ship for the White Ferns team, keeping the
momentum going by taking singles and hitting lovely shots. Mandhana provided a
superb direct hit to dismiss Green. Green and Halliday added 49 runs for the 5th
wicket.
The Indian
bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals. Amelia Kerr came in at
number at the 8th spot due to an injury she suffered. Kerr showed
her attacking skills while Gaze gave her most of the strike. Reddy got the
prized scalp of Gaze with a good catch by Saima Thakor at long-on. Kerr and
Gaze put on 36 runs for the 8th wicket.
Radha Yadav
dismissed Penfold hitting the stumps. Eden Carson was way shot of the crease
with a good throw by Hemalatha & gather by Radha to bundle out White Ferns
for 168.
It was a
dominating performance by the Indian women’s team as they bowled with great
control picking wickets at regular intervals.
For her 41
and 1 for 35, Deepti Sharma was named the player of the match award. Indian
Women’s team takes a 1-0 lead in the series.
Indian
Women 227 for 10 in 44.3 overs (Hasabins 42, Deepti Sharma 41, Amelia Kerr
4/42) beat NZ Women 168 for 10 in 40.4 overs (Halliday 39, Green 31, Radha
Yadav 3/35, Saima Thakor 2/25) by 59 runs.
