Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024: India Beat South Korea In A Thrilling Contest
The Indian
Women’s Hockey team registered a thrilling win over South Korea in their 2nd
game of the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy encounter played at Rajgir Sports Complex,
Bihar on 12th November. It ebbed and flowed before the Indian team
held onto their nerves to get three more valuable points.
It was an
explosive start for the Indian team with Sangita Kumari producing a reverse
flick shot goal from a combination pass by Neha and Navneet in the 3rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Indian team was awarded a green card as Manisha Chauhan
meaning a 2-minute suspension. The attackers kept pressure on Korean players with
aggressive moves. The Korean player was awarded a green card meaning a 2-minute
suspension. At the end of the first quarter, India led 1-0.
The Indian
team got off to a great start in the second quarter as Sunelita Toppo combined
with Beauty and passes to Deepika converting it into a goal in the 20th minute giving a 2-0 lead. The hosts kept
the pressure on the South Korean players keeping the momentum going. Sangita
Kumar missed a golden chance as the shot went wide off the goalpost. Navneet
also missed a brilliant chance. Sangita Kumari was awarded a green card which meant
a two-minute suspension for the forward player. At the end of the first half,
India had a solid 2-0 lead. Indian team dominated the first half with 9 circle penetrations
while 65 percent possession.
South Korea
began the 3rd quarter on an aggressive note as Park Miyhang missed a
golden chance with the shot going wide. Indian goalkeeper saved the first
penalty corner, but the rebound shot was slotted into a goal by Yuri Lee in the
34th minute to reduce the margin to 1-2. Cheon Enubi scored from a
penalty stroke in the 38th minute to allow South Korea to equalize
the scores. Indian team kept the pressure with aggressive moves but could not
convert it into goal. Right before the end of the third quarter, Sharmila Devi
was given a yellow card meaning a 5-minute suspension. At the end of the third
quarter, the score remained 2-2.
It was a superb
start to the fourth quarter for the Indian team with aggressive moves keeping
the pressure on the South Korean defense. They showed their class but were not
able to convert chances into goals. After lots of sustained pressure, the Indian
team earned a penalty corner which was well saved by the South Korean
goalkeeper Kim. Sujin was awarded a 2-minute suspension. Lalremsiami went off
the field with a powerful shot by Navneet. The Indian team was awarded a
penalty stroke as Deepika converted in the 57th minute to give the
hosts a 3-2 lead. Navneet Kaur missed another golden chance to convert it into
a goal. South Korea almost equalized the scores Hong Huigyeong missed a golden
chance to convert with a lovely pass by Kim Seona. The Indian team held onto
their nerves to win their second successive match.
In the other
2 matches of the day, Thailand and Japan ended in a 1-1 draw while China produced
another dominating performance with a 5-0 win. Both India and China won 2
matches each, but due to a better goal difference, China is currently at the
top of the points table. India will next face Thailand in their next match to
be played on 14th November.
