Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024: Indian Team Beat China To Top The Group
The Indian
Women’s Hockey Team continued their impressive run with a dominating win over
China in their 4th game of the Asian Champions Trophy 2024 played at
Rajgir Sports Complex, Bihar on 16th November 2024. With this win, the
hosts moved to the top of the points table.
Indian team
began the first quarter with aggression earning a penalty corner with Wu Surong
saving the goal. The 2nd penalty corner was not halted properly as
China made a counterattack move as Vaishnavi Phalke intercepted the shot. The
hosts put pressure on the Chinese defense, this Wu produced another superb
save. India committed unforced errors which resulted in a PC for China. China
also committed the mistake of not halting properly. The Indian team did not convert
the field goal with the shot going wide off the goalpost. At the end first
quarter, the scores remained 0-0.
Both teams
showed great attacking skills in the second quarter. Xu Yanan got a great
chance of converting it into a goal which went wide of Bichu. On the other
hand, India earned a penalty corner but did not yield any results. The hosts
got chances but were not able to convert them into goals. It was a good
performance by both teams as India had 12 circle penetrations as compared to 6
by China while the hosts had 54 percent possession as compared to 46 by China.
It was a
great start for the hosts in the third quarter as Sangita Kumari’s deflection
with a pass from Sushila Chanu in the 32nd minute gave a 1-0 lead. Combination passes as Salima Tete scored in the 37th minute
giving India a 2-0 lead. The Indian defense looked solid enough not allowing
any chances to score goals. It was an impressive performance by the Indian forwards
keeping pressure on the Chinese defense. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the Indian team led 2-0.
Indian team
put enough pressure on China with aggressive moves but could not convert into
goals. China also tried their best, but Indian defense was up to the mark. The Chinese
goalkeeper was removed to allow 11 attacking players. With 3 minutes remaining,
Vaishnavi was given a green card, meaning a 2-minute suspension. Deepika scored
from a penalty corner in the final minute giving the hosts a 3-0 lead. It was a
great performance by the Indian team right from the word go but missed a lot of
chances in the forwards.
With this
win, the Indian team moved to the top of the points table with one game to
spare. They will face Japan in their final league game to be played tomorrow. In the other matches today, Japan registered
their first win of the tournament beating Malaysia by 2-1 while South Korea
also registered their first win beating Thailand 4-0.
