BBL 2024-25 Knockout: Sydney Thunder Beat Melbourne Stars
Sydney
Thunder registered a comprehensive win over Melbourne Stars in the knockout
match played at Engine Stadium, Sydney on 22nd January 2025.
Melbourne
Stars captain Marcus Stoinis won the toss and decided to field first. Tom
Curran took an important wicket in the first over itself dismissing Thunder
captain David Warner with a good catch at midwicket. Matthew Gilkes showed intent
right from the word go putting enough pressure on the Stars bowling. Gilkes survived
a close catch shout which was given not out after replays. The match was
stopped due to lightning.
After a
short delay, the match was reduced to 19 overs a side. At the end of the first four
overs, Sydney Thunder scored 36 for 1. Usama Mir struck in his opening over by dismissing
Weigben with a good return catch. Weigben and Gilkes put on 37 runs for the 2nd
wicket.
Mir struck
again to get rid of the well-set Gilkes caught by Maxwell at the boundary to
leave Thunder in trouble. Oliver Davies struggled against disciplined Stars
bowling. Warren dismissed Sam Billings with a good catch by Tom Curran. Davies
and Garton took the power surge overs from the 14th to the 16th.
Peter Siddle and Stoinis delivered the goods for the Stars, giving away just 14
runs, also grabbing 2 wickets dismissing Garton and Chris Green.
Oliver
Davies hit some valuable runs before being dismissed trying to hit a big shot.
Nathan McAndrew and Tom Andrews put on valuable runs in the death overs helping
Thunder post a competitive total of 135 for 7. The pitch had a lot of help for
the pacers and spinners.
Chasing
down 136 runs to win, Sam Harper was bowled by McAndrew in the very first over
itself. Sydney Thunder did not appeal for a caught-behind call. McAndrew struck
again to get rid of Tom Rogers with a well-judged catch by Tanveer Sangha. It
was a disciplined bowling effort as they restricted Stars to 26 for 2 at the
end of four overs.
Andrews
struck in his first over to dismiss Handscomb to leave Stars struggling. Glenn
Maxwell smashed 3 boundaries against Andrews, giving some hope of winning. On
the other hand, Stoinis struggled against disciplined bowling by Chris Green
and Andrews.
Garton took
a stunning low catch to dismiss Stars captain Stoinis. Stoinis and Maxwell
added 38 runs for the 4th wicket. Tanveer Sangha struck twice in the
same over dismissing Maxwell and Tom Curran derailing Star’s innings.
Stars took
the power surge from the 13th to the 15th over. Hilton
Cartwright provided some hopes of winning with 15 runs in the first power surge
over. McAndrew struck to dismiss the dangerous Cartwright. Mark Steketee hit
some lusty shots against Sangha and Garton keeping the Stars hopes alive.
McAndrew
dismissed Steketee with a good catch by David Warner. He then ended the innings
getting rid of Warren to help Sydney Thunder win by 21 runs via the DLS method.
For his
match-winning spell of 5 for 16 in 4 overs, Nathan McAndrew was named the
player of the match award. Sydney Thunder will face Sydney Sixers in qualifier 2
to be played at SCG on 24th January 2025.

135 for 7 in 19 overs (Oliver Davies 36, Usama Mir 2/26, Tom Curran 2/26) beat
Melbourne Stars 114 in 18 overs (Glenn Maxwell 28, Nathan McAndrew 5/16) by 21
runs via DLS Method.
