BBL 2024-25: Mitchell Owen’s Special Leads Hobart Hurricanes To First Title

Hurricanes defeated Sydney Thunder in a one-sided final played at Ninja
Stadium, Belivere Oval, Hobart on 27th January 2025.

Hurricanes captain Nathan Ellis won the bat flip and decided to field first.
After a quiet first over by Riley Meredith, Jason Sangha put pressure on the home
team with attacking shots. At the end of the first four overs, Sydney Thunder
raced away to 40 for 0.
On the
other hand, David Warner looked cautious not able to time the shots. Sangha and
Warner showed intent keeping the scoreboard ticking with boundaries and taking
singles. Both Thunder openers looked in complete control making life tough for
Hurricanes bowlers.
After the first
drinks break, the Hurricanes captain Nathan Ellis struck immediately dismissing
David Warner caught by Matthew Wade. Sangha and Warner added 97 runs for the
opening wicket. Ellis got rid of Matthew Gilkes’ very next delivery, taking an
inside edge onto the stumps.
Jason
Sangha looked composed, reaching his half-century off 31 deliveries. Billings
showed intent on hitting lovely shots, keeping the momentum going for the Thunder.
Meredith produced a brilliant yorker to dismiss Sam Billings. Sangha and Billings added 37 runs for the 3rd
wicket.
Nathan
Ellis made another important breakthrough for the Hurricanes dismissing
well-set Jason Sangha caught by McDermott at covers. Oliver Davies looked in
impressive touch during power-surge overs taking between the 16th to
the 18th. They scored 20 runs in the 2 overs.
Riley
Meredith struck twice off successive deliveries dismissing Oliver Davies and Geroge
Garton to stem the flow. Chris Jordan struggled in the final over as Chris
Green hit valuable runs helping Thunder post 182 for 7. Chris Green was run out
while trying to attempt the second run. Riley Meredith and Nathan Ellis grabbed
3 wickets each.
Mitchell Owen’s
Special Knock
Chasing
down 183 runs to win, Mitchell Owen showed intent right from the word go
putting enough pressure on Thunder bowling. Owen started the innings with 23
runs against McAndrew including 2 boundaries and 1 six.
Owen hammered
Wes Agar for 22 runs in his first over to put enough pressure on the Thunder bowling.
On the other hand, Jewell kept the strike rotating. Mitchell smashed fifty off
just 16 deliveries. Hurricanes raced away to 74 for 0 at the end of the first
four overs.
Owen continued
to dominate the Thunder bowling with lusty hits not allowing any bowlers to
settle. Tanveer Sangha struck twice in the same over dismissing Jewell and
Nikhil Chaudhary. Jewell made 13 runs off 12 deliveries. Jewell and Owen added
109 runs for the opening wicket.
Mitchell hammered
the Thunder bowling against Tanveer Sangha not allowing him to settle. He
reached a special hundred 39 deliveries giving momentum for Hurricanes batters.
His innings ended trying to hit a big shot caught by substitute Weigben.
After a
great start by Mitchell Owen, Wade &Ben McDermott took the power surge
overs from the 12th to 14th overs. Both batters hit 29
runs from 2 overs. McDermott hit the winning runs with a boundary to help the
Hurricanes win their maiden BBL title. McDermott and Wade put on unbeaten 46
runs for the 4th wicket.
For his
match-winning knock of 108 off 42 deliveries with 6 fours and 11 sixes, Mitchell
Owen was named the player of the match award.
Hobart Hurricanes 185 for 3 in 14.1 overs (Mitchell Owen 108, Tanveer Sangha 2/42) beat Sydney Thunder 182 for 7 in 20 overs (Jason Sangha 67, Warner 48, Nathan Ellis 3/23, Riley Meredith 3/27) by 7 wickets.
