BBL 2024-25: Sydney Thunder Stun Sydney Sixers To Reach The Finals

 

Sydney Thunder stunned favorites Sydney Sixers in the challenger of the 2024-25 Big Bash League played at Sydney Cricket Ground, SCG on 24th January 2025.

Thunder captain David Warner won the bat flip and decided to field first. Jack Edwards and Kurtis Patterson struggle to score runs easily. Nathan McAndrew got the breakthrough for Thunder dismissing Jack Edwards with a lovely catch by Warner at mid-off.

It was a disciplined bowling effort by Thunder bowlers not allowing Sixers openers to score runs easily. Wes Agar struck to dismiss Kurtis Patterson as Chris Green took a good catch. At the end of the first four overs, Sixers scored 23 for 2.

Joshua Phillipe did not open the innings for the Sixers in this match and came at number 3. Moises Henriques and Joshua Phillipe kept the scoreboard ticking against Tanveer Sangha and Andrew. Joshua Phillipe was run out in an unfortunate manner as it hit the hand of Sangha on the non-striker. Phillipe and Henriques added 31 runs for the 3rd wicket.

Sixers captain Henriques and Jordan Silk kept the scoreboard ticking with singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Andrews struck twice in the same over dismissing Henriques with a stunning catch by Garton at covers. He then got rid of Lalchan Shaw to leave the Sixers in trouble at 76 for 5.

Ben Dwarshuis and Jordan Silk showed intent keeping the scoreboard ticking. Both batters took the power surge overs from the 15th to the 17th over. Both scored 20 runs in the 2 overs to stage a solid comeback. George Garton got the massive wicket of Dwarshuis with a brilliant catch by Weigben. Dwarshuis and Silk added 56 runs for the 6th wicket. Jordan Silk and Hayden Kerr hit some valuable runs in death overs to help the Sixers post below par total of 151 for 7 in 20 overs. For Thunder, Wes Agar and Andrews took 2 wickets each while Nathan McAndrew and Garton took 1 wicket each.

Chasing a modest total of 152 to win, Jason Sangha was promoted to open the innings along with Warner. Sangha and Warner showed intent to keep the scoreboard ticking with boundaries. Mitchell Perry struck an important blow dismissing Thunder captain Warner caught by Edwards.

Sydney Thunder scored 35 for 1 at the end of the first four overs. Sangha and Gilkes kept the momentum going with positive shots to keep Thunder on course for a win. Chohan got a much-needed breakthrough for the Sixers dismissing Sangha caught by Edwards. Sangha and Gilkes added 36 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Soon after, Gilkes was run out with a superb throw by Kerr and gathered by Edwards to bring back the Sixers into the game. Sam Billings looked busy keeping the strike rotating and hitting the bad deliveries for boundaries.

Kerr struck for the Sixers dismissing Hugh Weigben taking an inside edge onto the stumps. Chris Green also joined in the party keeping the momentum going by taking singles and hitting some lovely shots to the boundary. Sydney Sixers kept the pressure by dismissing Chris Green and George Garton in quick succession.  

Billings and McAndrew took the power surge from the 17th to the 19th over. McAndrew smashed a quickfire cameo to remain unbeaten to help Thunder register a thrilling 4- wicket win with 7 balls to spare. McAndrew hit the winning runs with six.

For his 42 not out off 29 balls, Sam Billings was named the player of the match award. Sydney Thunder will face Hobart Hurricanes in the finals on 27th January at Ninja Stadium, Hobart.   

Sydney Thunder 157 for 6 in 18.5 overs (Sam Billings 42*, Sangha 30, Hayden Kerr 2/35) beat Sydney Sixers 151 for 7 in 20 overs (Jordan Silk 43*, Ben Dwarshuis 30, Tom Andrews 2/15, Wes Agar 2/25) by 4 wickets.
