India Open 2025 Day 4: Satwik/Chirag Enter Semi-Finals, Sindhu and George Crash Out
The Indian contingent
witnessed Satwik/Chirag Shetty progress into the semi-finals while Sindhu and
Kiran George crashed out of the Super 750 Indian Open played at KD Jadhav Indoor
Stadium, New Delhi on 17th January 2025.
PV Sindhu
suffered a heartbreaking loss to Tungjung of Indonesia in three thrilling
games. It was a dominating performance by the Indonesian keeping the pressure
on Sindhu and never allowing any chances. At the mid-game break, Tungjung had a
commanding 11-4 lead. After the break, it was one-way traffic with the
Indonesian winning the first game with a comfortable scoreline of 21-9.
It was a disastrous
start for the Sindhu in the second committing unforced errors. Trailing 4-9,
Sindhu made a strong comeback to take an 11-10 lead at the break. The match
ebbed and flowed with both players fighting for each point. Sindhu held onto
his nerves to win the second game by 21-19 to force the match into the decider.
The third
game saw a closely fought affair right from the word go. The match ebbed and
flowed with both players fighting for each point. At the mid-game interval,
Tungjung had a slender 11-9 lead. After the break, it was an epic fight for
both players with the match level at 17-17. Tungjung took 4 points in
succession to win the third game by 21-17 to move into the semi-finals.
Kiran
George suffered a straight-game loss to Weng Heng Yong of China. The Chinese
began brightly in the first game keeping the pressure on Kiran. Kiran George
was playing his first quarterfinals at this level. Weng had a commanding 11-6
lead at the break. After the break, George tried his best to make a comeback,
but Weng showed his class to win the first game by 21-13.
The second
game also began well for Weng with lovely shots and keeping pressure on George.
After the mid-game break, George showed great fighting spirit to level the
scores and take an 18-14 lead. Weng made another strong comeback into the game,
winning 6 points in succession to win it by 21-18.
The dynamic
duo of Satwik/Chirag Shetty defeated Kim Jin/Kang of South Korea in two
straight games. It was a dominating performance by Satwik/Chirag right from the
word go in the first game keeping consistent pressure on the Korean with
smashes and drop shots. At the break, the Indian pairing took a commanding 11-3
lead. After the break, it was one-way traffic as Satwik/Chirag won the first
game by 21-10.
South
Korean pair Ji/Kang began the second game brightly before Satwik/Chirag Shetty dominated
the play not allowing any chances for the opponents. At the mid-game break, the
Indian pairing took an 11-5 lead. After the break, Jin/Kang fought back
strongly with their attacking style reducing points. Satwik/Chirag showed experience
to win the second game by 21-17 to move into the semi-finals.
They will
face the Malaysian pair of Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin. Satwik/Chirag would
look to go one step ahead to enter the finals.
