Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025: Karnataka Beat Vidarbha To Win The Title

 

Karnataka defeated Vidarbha in a high-scoring thrilling final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024/25 played at Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara on 18th January 2025.

Vidarbha captain Karun Nair won the toss and decided to field first. After a bright start by Paddikal and Mayank Agarwal, Yash Thakur struck dismissing Devdutt Paddikal with a stunning catch by Dhruv Shorey at slips. Mayank Agarwal looked in fine touch keeping the momentum going along with Avneesh. At the end of the first 10 overs, Karnataka scored 52 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Bhute struck to dismiss KV Aneesh caught by Yash Kadam at extra cover. Avneesh and Mayank added 41 runs for the 2nd wicket. Bhute struck again to dismiss Karnataka captain Mayank to leave them in some trouble. Smaran looked in sublime touch keeping the scoreboard ticking. Shritjith took time to settle before launching an assault on Karun Nair, Yash Kadam &Harsh Dubey. Both Karnataka batters kept boundaries and sixes with ease.  

Both Shritjith and Smaran completed their half-centuries off 47 deliveries. After reaching their milestones, both batters looked in complete control. Yash Kadam provided the breakthrough dismissing Shritjith with a sharp return catch. Smaran and Shritjith added 160 runs for the 4th wicket.

Abhinav Manohar showed caution initially before launching an assault against Yash Thakur, Darshan Nalkande hitting them for big shots. On the other hand, Smaran looked cautious taking singles giving the strike to Manohar. Manohar smashed the Vidarbha all over the park, not allowing any breather.

Manohar completed his fifty off just 34 deliveries. After reaching fifty, he continued to dominate the Vidarbha bowlers. Smaran completed his second century this tournament off 89 deliveries. Nalkande struck twice in the 49th over dismissing both Smaran& Manohar. Smaran and Manohar added 106 runs for the 4th wicket. Hardik Raj hit some valuable runs in the final over against Nalkande. It was a superb batting display by Karnataka batters as they posted a mammoth total of 348 for 6 in 50 overs.

Chasing 349 runs to win, Yash Rathod and Dhruv Shorey began off positively putting pressure on Krishna and V Koushik. Abhilash Shetty struck in his first over by dismissing Rathod with a good catch by Paddikal at slips. Vidarbha openers put on 32 runs for the opening wicket.

Dhruv Shorey looked in good touch along with Vidarbha captain Karun Nair. Vidarbha scored 59 for 1 at the end of the first 10 overs. Prasidh Krishna got the big wicket of Karun Nair with a lovely delivery shattering the stumps. Nair and Shorey added 56 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Yash Kadam showed intent against Karnataka bowlers while Shorey looked confident with his strokes. Shorey completed his fifty of 49 deliveries keeping Vidarbha hopes alive. Hardik Raj struck an important blow dismissing Yash Kadam. Kadam and Shorey added 42 runs for the 3rd wicket.

Jitesh Sharma looked in good touch but could not up the ante with the run rate climbing. On the other hand, Shorey kept the scoreboard ticking. Koushik struck another important blow dismissing Jitesh Sharma with a lovely catch by Prasidh Krishna. Jitesh and Shorey added 62 runs for the 4th wicket.

Shubham Dubey struggled with his timing as he was not able to time the shots. He perished trying to hit a big shot. Shorey completed his century off 100 deliveries. Abhilash Shetty dismissed centurion Shorey caught by Praveen Dubey to leave Vidarbha on the backfoot.

Harsh Dubey provided some resistance to the Vidarbha side, hitting some big shots. Aproov Wankhade. Koushik struck dismissing Wankhade. Wankhade contributed just 12 runs. Harsh Dubey and Wankhade added 45 runs for the 7th wicket.

Harsh Dubey showed his class reaching his fifty off just 25 deliveries. It was a tall ask for Vidarbha batters as they were bundled out for 312 in 48.2 overs. Prasidh Krishna, V Koushik & Abhilash Shetty took 3 wickets each.

Karnataka won their 5th Vijay Hazare Trophy title. Their previous win in this tournament was during the 2018/19 edition as they defeated Tamil Nadu.

For his 101 of 92, R Smaran was named the player of the match award. Karnataka’s only loss in the tournament came against Hyderabad in the league stage.

Karnataka 348 for 6 in 50 overs (Smaran 101, Manohar 79, Darshan Nalkande 2/67) beat Vidarbha 312 in 48.2 overs (Dhruv Shorey 110, Harsh Dubey 63, Koushik 3/47) by 36 runs.
