WTC 2023-25: Pakistan Finish Last
The
Pakistani Cricket Team endured a horrendous 2023-25 WTC cycle as they finished
last after a 120-run loss against West Indies in the 2nd test match
played at Multan Cricket Ground, Multan on 27th January 2025.
They began
this cycle with a 2-0 whitewash over Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka during July 2023. Under
the captaincy of Babar Azam, Pakistan registered a 4-wicket win in the first
test at Galle and then thrashed the hosts by a massive innings and 222 runs
loss at SSC, Colombo.
Pakistan’s
next away was their toughest challenge. They faced Australia in Australia
during the 3-match Test series in December 2023-January 2024. Pakistan continued
their poor form in tests on Australian soil. Shan Masood was appointed the
captain removing Babar Azam.
They began
this series with a disappointing 360-run loss at Optus Stadium, Perth. Pakistan
gave a tough fight in the 2nd test at Melbourne but could not withstand
the loss by 79 runs.
Despite, Aamar
Jamal’s brilliant performances with the bat and ball in the 3rd test
match at Sydney, Pakistan suffered 8 wicket loss to be whitewashed.
Pakistan suffered
an embarrassing 0-2 loss whitewash against Bangladesh at home. Both matches
were played at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. They lost the first test match after
scoring 448 runs for 6. Bangladesh hammered 565 on the board. Pakistani batting
crumbled under pressure dismissed for 146 setting 30 runs target.
The second
test was another disappointing outing for Pakistan. Pakistan made 274 in their
first innings. After reducing Bangladesh to 26 for 6, they allowed Liton Das,
& Mehidy Hasan Miraz to post 262 on the board. In their 2nd
innings, Pakistan was bundled out for 172. Bangladesh chased down the target
with 5 wickets to spare.
Pakistan
eventually registered a 2-1-win home series win over England in October 2024.
The first test saw the hosts suffering an innings and 47 runs loss at Multan
after the hosts made 556 runs in the first innings. England hammered Pakistan
bowling posting 823 for 7.
Pakistan
turned to spin in Multan and Rawalpindi. Sajid Khan and Nauman Ali took most of
the wickets registering 152 runs victory in the 2nd test at Multan
and then 9 wickets win in the 3rd test.
Pakistan’s poor
form in SENA countries continued. They suffered a 0-2 whitewash against South
Africa. Despite Mohammad Abbas’s brilliance, Pakistan could not whip out Kagiso
Rabada and Marco Jansen defending 148 runs at Super-Sport Park, Centurion from
26th December onwards.
They were
completely outplayed by South Africa in the 2nd test at Newlands, Cape
Town. Pakistan bowlers struggled badly with hosts South Africa posting mammoth
615 in the first innings. After posting 194 runs in the first innings, Pakistan
made a superb effort following-on amassing 478 runs. South Africa chased down
the target of 58 without losing any wickets.
During the
final Test series at home against West Indies, Pakistan registered a dominating
127 runs win at Multan Cricket Stadium on 17th January 2025. Sajid
Khan, Nauman Ali& Abrar on a pitch that spun from ball 1.
The second
test saw Pakistan suffering an embarrassing a 120-run loss in the 2nd
test at Multan on 25th January. After reducing the visitors to 38
for 7, they allowed them to score 163 runs. In reply, Pakistani batters
struggled bundled out for 154 as Pakistan took a 9- runs lead.
Pakistan’s
bowling struggled as the visitors made 244 runs on the board. Chasing down 254,
they were bundled out for just 133. The series ended with a 1-1 draw.
Pakistan played
a total of 14 matches in this cycle winning 5 &lost 9. They suffered 13
point deduction due to a slow over-rate with a percentage of 27.98.
