Malaysia Masters 2025: Kidambi Srikanth Beat Popov In A Thrilling Encounter

Kidambi Srikanth proved his worth with a stunning quarterfinal win over Toma Junior Popov of France in three grueling games at the Super 500 Malaysia Masters, played at Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur on 23rd May 2025.

The first game began with both players putting on an excellent display of badminton taking alternate points. At the mid-game break, Popov had slender 11-10 lead. After the break, it ebbed and flowed with Srikanth looking in complete control putting pressure on the French. Popov saved match points to level the scores at 20-20. Srikanth showed great spirit keeping the momentum going winning first game with a narrow scoreline of 24-22.

Toma Junior Popov began the 2nd set on a positive note keeping pressure on Srikanth taking a decent lead in initial stages. The Indian showed great spirit keeping the pressure on French. At the game interval, Popov had good lead. After the break, Srikanth scored points with lovely drop shots and smashes keeping him under pressure to level the scores at 14-14. Popov then produced some lovely badminton winning the second game by 21-17 to force the match into the decider.

The third game also began on an even keel with both players taking alternate points. At the game interval, Popov took 11-7 lead. After the break, Srikanth showed great spirit keeping Popov under immense pressure. The match ebbed and flowed before the Indian took 20-17.

The French saved 3 match points to level the scores at 20-20. Srikanth held onto his nerves to beat Popov by 22-20 and entering semi-finals of the Super 500 Malaysia Masters event.

This will be his first semi-finals appearance at Super 500 event since 2022. He will now Yushi Tanaka of Japan. Srikanth came from the qualifying rounds in this event.

The mixed doubles pairing of Dhruv Kapila/Tanisha Crasto lost to first seeded Jiang ZB and Wei YX of China. It was a closely fought first game as both pairs took alternate points. The match went right down the wire before Jiang and Wei won the first game by 24-22.

The second game was a one-sided affair as Jiang and Wei dominated the Indian pairing winning with comfortable scoreline of 21-13.

  The Indian shuttlers had a disappointing outing as only one of them made it into the quarterfinals of the Super 1000 Malaysia Open 2025 played at Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur on 9 th January. HS Prannoy, women’s doubles pair of Tressa Jolly suffered narrow losses while Bansod, mixed doubles pair of Crasto/Kapila, and other pair lost in a one-sided affair.   The Indian shuttlers had a disappointing day with only 2 of them progressing into the second of the Super 750 Singapore Open 2025 played on 27 th May. PV Sindhu eased past WY Zhang of Canada in two straight games. It was a dominating performance by former World champion putting the opponent under immense pressure.
