Macau Open 2025: Two Indians Qualify For The Semi-Finals

 

It was a good day for the Indian shuttlers as Lakshya Sen and Tharun Mannepalli registered victories to move into the semi-finals of the Super 300 Macau Open played at Macau on 1st August 2025.

 

Tharun Mannepalli continued his brilliant run in the tournament with an impressive win over current junior World Champion Hu Za of China. It was a closely fought affair in the initial stages of the first game as both players took alternate points. At the mid-game break, Tharun had a 11-9 lead. After the break, Tharun showed his domination to win the first game comfortably by 21-12.

Hu Za began the second game on a good note taking 6-3 lead and continued his domination to take commanding 11-6 lead at the break. After the interval, it was one-way traffic by Chinese winning second game easily by 21-13.

Tharun Mannepalli made a strong start to the third game putting enough pressure on Hu Za with smashes and not allowing any chances for his opponent. At the mid-game break, the Indian had a commanding 11-4 lead. After the side change, there were rallies among these two good players. Hu Za showed his fighting spirit to reduce the gap at 14-16. Tharun Mannepalli was given scare but held onto his nerves winning with scoreline of 21-18 to move into the semi-finals. He will face Justin Hoh of Malaysia.

Lakshya Sen edged past qualifier Zhu XC of China in three games. Zhu made a good start to the first game before Sen showed his domination to take a commanding 11-5 lead at the break. After the break, it was one-way traffic as Sen won the first game comfortably by 21-14.

The second game saw Lakshya playing attacking badminton but Zhu proved to be tough with his smashes. Despite playing some loose shots, the Indian roared back taking a 11-8 lead at the break. Lakshya showed his experience to take 17-14 lead before Zhu made a strong comeback winning second game at 21-18.

Lakshya started the third game on an aggressive note putting enough pressure on Zhu with his tricky shots and continued his domination with 11-7 lead at the break. After the side change, the Indian shuttler hit smashes and did not allow Chinese opponent any chances to win decider by 21-14 to move into the semi-finals. He will face A Farhan of Indonesia.

The men’s doubles pairing of Satwik/Chirag Shetty lost in the quarterfinals to CH Jian and M Haikal of Malaysia in three games. The first game saw Malaysian pair dominate right from the word go putting enough pressure on Satwik/Chirag and eventually won the first game easily at 21-14.

Satwik/Chirag made a strong comeback in the second game with smashes and keeping momentum going making sure they don’t allow Malaysian any chances winning with easily scoreline of 21-13.

The Indian pairing had a decent start in the deciding game and looked to take control with a decent lead at the mid-game break. After side change, Satwik/Chirag displayed attacking badminton looking good to take the match at 18-15. Jian and Haikal made a stunning comeback as they held their nerves winning with 22-20 scoreline.

1.      Tharun Mannepalli defeated Hu Za (Men’s Singles)- 21-12, 13-21, 21-18

2.      Lakshya Sen defeated Zhu XC (Men’s Singles)- 21-14, 18-21, 21-14

3.      Satwik/Chirag Shetty lost to Jian/Haikal (Men’s Doubles)- 14-21, 21-13, 20-22.
