ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 Match 4: Statement Win For England

 

The 2017 World Champions England made a great start to the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 with a thumping win over South Africa in match 4 of tournament played at Basapara Stadium, Guwahati on 3rd October.

England captain Nat Sciver Brunt won the toss and decided to field first. The decision paid off as Linsey Smith struck in her first over dismissing SA captain Laura Woolvardt with a simple return catch. She then got rid of other opener Tanzim Brits with a lovely delivery.

Lauren Bell produced a lovely delivery to get rid of Sunne Luus shattering the stumps to leave South Africa in trouble. Smith struck for the third time with another good delivery dismissing Marizanne Kapp.

Anneke Bosch and Sinalo Jafta tried to steady the ship but Sciver Brunt struck on her first delivery getting rid of Bosch leaving SA in dire trouble. At the end of the first 10 overs, South African women made 38 for 5.

After the field restrictions, England bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals. Brunt struck for the 2nd time getting rid of Chole Tryon with a simple catch to Capsey.

Sophie Ecclestone got into her act dismissing Nandie de Klerk with an easy catch to slips by Heather Knight. Charlie Dean and Sophie Ecclestone completed the formalities bundling out South African women for just 69 in 20.4 overs. For South African women, Jafta was the top scorer with 22 while 10 batters dismissed in single digits scores.

Linsey Smith finished with figures of 3 for 7 in 4 overs, Sciver Brunt, Ecclestone and Charlie Dean took 2 wickets each while Lauren Bell took 1 wicket.

Chasing 70 runs to win, Amy Jones looked in good touch putting the bad deliveries away for boundaries while Tammy Beaumont kept the strike rotating making life tough for SA bowlers. At the end of the first 10 overs, England women scored 39 for 0.

Jones and Beaumont continued their domination as they won the match by 10 wickets with 35.5 overs to spare. With this massive win, England women raced away to the top of points table.

For her 3 for 7 in 4 overs, Linsey Smith named the player of the match award breaking the backbone of SA top order. 

England W 73 for 0 in 14.1 overs (Amy Jones 40*, Tammy Beaumont 21*, Marizanne Kapp 0/13) beat SA W 69 in 20.4 overs (Sinalo Jafta 22, Linsey Smith 3/7) by 10 wickets.
