FIH Pro Hockey League 2025/26: Indian Men’s Hockey Team Register First Win In Shootouts
The Indian
men’s hockey team eventually tasted success with their first win of the Pro
Hockey League 2025/26 against Australia played at Hobart on 25th February
2026.
Australia
began the first quarter with five circle penetrations while India did not the opponent’s
circle. India earned the first penalty corner, but could not convert into a
goal. Australia dominated possession with 8 circle penetrations as compared to
3 by India.
The Indian
team decided to give Suraj Kakera in the 2nd quarter. Australia kept
the pressure with attacking moves with penalty corners but could not convert it
into goals. Australia earned two PCS but lacked sharpness and accuracy. At the
end of the first half, scores remained 0-0. Australia dominated circle penetrations
in 1st half with 13 as compared to 7 by India.
It was a
good start by Indian team in the 3rd quarter with a penalty corner but
could not convert it into a goal. Hundal got a chance from a flick but narrowly
missed the goal. GK Mohith produced some magic with lovely saves to deny
Australia a chance. At the end of the third quarter the scores still remained
0-0.
Australia
began the fourth quarter with a penalty corner, but it was another lovely save.
Jermey Hayward finally converted their fifth PC into a goal in the 49th
minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
India cameback
strongly with Hardik Singh playing a long pass to Abhishek and giving pass to
Shailand Lakra inside the circle to level the scores at 1-1 in 51st
minute. India penalty corner was moved to stroke; on review it was overturned
to PC. The PC was hit high and wide.
It was an
amazing game of hockey as Australia earned penalty corner in dying moments, but
could not take the shot which meant India going into their third successive
penalty shootout.
Mohith made
superb saves of Brand, Henderson and Burns during the shootouts. Lakra, Maninder
scored the first two goals while Abhishek missed third shot. Hayward converted
penalty stroke while Vishnukant scored to make it 3-1 in favor of India.
It was an
impressive by Indian men’s hockey team after two narrow losses to Spain and
Australia in shootouts.
