FIH Women’s World Cup Qualifiers 2026: Navneet Kaur hattrick helps India Register Commanding Win Over Wales
The Indian
women’s hockey team produced a well deserved 4-1 win over Wales in the final
Group B match during Women’s World Cup qualifying match played at Hyderabad on
11th March 2026.
It was a
great start by the Indian team as they put consistent pressure on Wales team. Sakshi
Rana scored her first goal in international with a brilliant reverse shot
inside the D during 7th minute to give India 1-0 lead. A good review
by Indian team resulted in a penalty corner but Udita Duhan dragflick was well
defended by Wales defense. At the end of the first quarter, India led 1-0.
Navneet and
Lalremsaimi combination shot was well saved by Wales goalkeeper Horrell Fifon.
Wales got two penalty corners as the second one was brilliantly guarded by
Bichu Devi. After Manisha missed first PC, Navneet Kaur scored with lovely
dragflick in the 29th minute to give India a 2-0 lead and ended the
first half at same scoreline 2-0.
It was an ideal
start for Wales in the third quarter with a penalty corner but it did not yield
in a goal. Indian team missed two golden chances of scoring field goals. Navneet
Kaur scored her second goal with penalty corner in the 34th minute
to give India 3-0 lead. India earned another PC but Welsh goalkeeper Horrell saved
the shot easily. Betsan Thomas scored a lovely field goal
inside circle going past Indian defense in 39th minute to reduce margin
at 1-3. At the end of the third quarter, Indian team still led 3-1.
It could
have been an ideal start for Wales as they were awarded penalty stroke. Wales
captain Bingham Elizabeth missed stroke going wide. Soon after, India was
awarded a penalty stroke as Navneet Kaur scored her third goal in the 55th
minute to be 4-1. It was a dominating performance by Indian team as they
outplayed Wales with a comfortable scoreline.
With this
win, India topped the Group B including 2 wins and 1 draw. They will now Italy
in the semi-finals on 13th March.
Indian team
are confirmed their spot in FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 to be played in
August this year.
