Hyderabad Open 2019: Sourabh Verma wins title, women’s doubles pair settles for silver
It was a mixed day for Indian shuttler’s as Sourabh Verma
won the men’s singles title and the women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa
and Sikki Reddy settles for silver at the Super 100 tournament played at
Gachibowli Indoor Stadium, Hyderabad on Sunday.
Sourabh Verma defeated Loh Kean Yeaw of Singapore in three grueling
sets by 21-13, 14-21, 21-16 to win the men’s singles title. In the first game,
Sourabh played with aggression producing smashes and drop shots to lead 11-4 at
the interval. After the interval, the Indian continued his domination to win
first set easily at 21-13.
The second game also started on an aggressive for the Indian
taking a commanding 10-4 lead. Loh came back strongly taking 6 successive
points to level the scores at 10-10. Sourabh made a lot of unforced errors. At
the interval, the Indian had a slender lead of 11-10. After the break, the
Singapore player showed his aggression and did not allow the Indian to play an attacking game. Loh won the second set at 21-14 to force the match into the decider.
Sourabh Verma had a disappointing start to the third game
trailing 6-8. The Indian came back strongly and took a slender 11-10 lead at the
interval. After the break, it was a dominating display by Sourabh who played
with aggression producing smashes and drop shots to win the third set at 21-16
to win the title. Last year, Sameer Verma had won the Hyderabad Open title.
In the women’s doubles, Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy had
to settle for silver as they lost to Korean
pair of Baek Ha-na and Jung Kyun-Eun in two straight games at 17-21, 17-21. It
was a good start for the Indian pair in the first game with great smashes and
drop shots. At the interval, Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy led 11-8. After the
interval, the Indian pair committed mistakes hitting either in the net or wide
to lose the first set at 17-21.
It was a tight start in the 2nd game with both
pairs taking alternate points till 4-4. The Korean pair produced a great display
of badminton to lead 11-7 at the interval. After the interval, Ponnappa and
Reddy tried to make a comeback but had to pay for their mistakes. The Indian
pair lost the 2nd set also at 17-21.
In other matches of the day, Muhmmad Shohibul Fikri and Maulana
defeated Na Sung- Seung and Wang Chan of South Korea by 21-18, 21-18 to win the
men’s doubles title.
Yeo Jia Min defeated An Se-Young of South Korea in three
sets by 21-12, 17-21, 21-19 to win the women’s singles title. It was an exciting
match between these two young players. The Singapore player dominated the first
game to win it by 21-12. The second set saw the South Korean player fighting
back to win the 2nd game to force the match into the decider. In the final
and deciding game, both players fought for each point before the Singapore player
won the match at 21-19.
Hang Pang Ron and Cheah Yee See of Malaysia defeated Adnan
Maulana and Bandaso of Indonesia in three sets by 21-16, 16-21, 21-11 to win
the mixed doubles title.
