This Day That Year: Moeen Ali took a hattrick in Test match against South Africa

 Moeen Ali became the first off-spinner from England to pick-up a hattrick after a gap of 79 years. He achieved the feat during the final day of the 3 rd Test match played at Kennington Oval, London. Defending a massive target of 492 runs to win, Roland Jones and Ben Stokes did the job for the hosts by picking the first seven wickets. Ali took the wicket of centurion Dean Elgar with a good catch by Stokes at slips, Rabada with the same dismissal as Elgar and Morne Morkel off the very first ball. England took the review to dismiss Morne Morkel. He helped England bowl out South Africa for 252. England won the match by 239 runs. Moeen Ali finished with figures of 4 for 45 in 16.1 overs. On 31 st July 1956, Jim Laker an off-break bowler became the first bowler to pick up all 10 wickets in an innings during the final day of the 4 th Ashes Test match against Australia played at Old Trafford, Manchester. During that time, the Test matches were played on the course of six days with 1 day being the rest day. England captain Peter May won the toss and decided to bat first. It was a brilliant batting effort by the hosts as Richardson 104, Cowdrey 80, DS Sheppard 113, Evans 47 and contributions from every batsman helped England post 459. After a match-winning performance in the 3 rd Test match against West Indies at Old Trafford, Manchester on 28 th July, Stuart Broad jumps significantly in the latest ICC Test bowlers’ rankings announced today. Australian pacer Pat Cummins retains the top spot. He has been occupying the bowlers ranking in Test matches for quite some time. New Zealand left-arm pacer Neil jumps one place to number 2 nd in the rankings. Cummins and Wagner have not played any international cricket since March. Stuart Broad jumps 7 places up to his career-best rankings of number 3. It was a fabulous achievement for Stuart Broad as he became the 4 th fast bowler and 7 th overall bowler to grab 500 wickets in Test matches. He achieved this remarkable feat by getting rid of Kraigg Braithwaite LBW during the ongoing match played at Old Trafford, Manchester on Tuesday. He picked a 10-wicket haul. For his match-winning contributions, Broad was named the man of the match.   Broad had a remarkable Test career so far. He was dropped from the first Test match against West Indies at Southampton that frustrated him that led to a defeat of the hosts by 4 wickets. The England Cricket Team produced a dominating display on the fifth and final day of the 3 rd Test match played at Old Trafford, Manchester on Tuesday. By the virtue of this win, England earned 40 more points in the ICC Test Championship points table. Starting on the overnight score of 10 for 2, Shai Hope and Kriagg Braithwaite started off confidently against England bowlers.
