Tokyo Olympics 2020: Indian women’s hockey team created history

 The Indian women’s hockey team scripted history as they qualified for the quarterfinals in Olympics history after a gap of 41 years. It is a memorable effort by Rani Rampal led side who showed great courage and fight after losing 3 successive matches to top teams like Netherlands, Germany, and Great Britain. It was a tough struggle for the women’s team who lost to Netherlands by 1-5 in the opening game. Despite playing excellent hockey and Gurjit Kaur missing penalty stroke they lost to Germany by 0-2. The third match was the toughest match for the Indian women’s team conceded goals right from the start. Despite equalling the scores, Great Britain proved their worth and made it 4-1. Needing to win remaining matches against Ireland and South Africa, they struggled a lot against Ireland.  India’s ace badminton shuttler PV Sindhu lost her semi-finals to World number 1 Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei easily played at Mushino Sports Plaza, Tokyo on Saturday. Both players started on even taking 2 early points. After the initial battle, PV Sindhu looked in decent touch and put Tai Tzu Ying under pressure taking points in succession. The Indian managed to attack World number 1. At the mid-game interval, PV Sindhu took an 11-7 lead. After the break, Tai Tzu Ying fought back strongly with smashes and netplay leveling the scores at 11-11. Both players fought for each point and made life tough for each other.  Despite being not at their best, the Indian women’s team defeated South Africa in the last Group A match to stay alive in the Tokyo Olympics played at Oi Hockey Stadium, North Pitch on Saturday. The Indian team started off aggressively earning 2 penalty corners in the initial stages. Soon after, Vandana Kataria scored from a deflection in the 4 th minute to give India a 1-0 lead. Indian team continued their domination over the South African team. The South African attackers made aggressive moves.  After sensational group matches, the quarterfinals of the men’s hockey tournament in the Tokyo Olympics has been announced. Australia finished top of Pool A with 4 wins and 1 draw. After being drubbed by Australia 1-7, India stormed back into contention winning 4 matches with 12 points. Needing to stay alive in the tournament, Argentina defeated New Zealand to confirm their 3 rd spot. Spain completed fourth place with only 1 win, 2 losses, and 2 draws. In the other group, Belgium topped the Pool with 4 wins and 1 draw. Germany ended the Pool stage with 9 points with 3 wins and 2 losses.  The Indian men’s hockey team ended the Group stage with a convincing win over Japan played at Oi Hockey Stadium, North Pitch on Thursday. It was an aggressive start by both teams made good moves but the defense was up to the mark. Despite the circle penetrations by the Indian team, they were not able to convert goals. Harmanpreet Singh converted the penalty corner into a goal in the 13 th minute to give India a 1-0 lead. The Indian team-maintained aggression and ended the first quarter at 1-0.  A great all-round display was enough as Sri Lanka registered a resounding win in the deciding T20I match against depleted Indian side played at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Thursday.  The Indian men’s hockey team produced a credible performance as they defeated Olympic Champions Argentina in their fourth Group match played at Oi Hockey Stadium on Thursday. It was an aggressive start by the Indian team as they earned a couple of chances in the initial stages of the first quarter. Sumit received a green card and sat out for 2 minutes. The Indian forward put consistent pressure on Argentina's defense. At the end of the first quarter, the scores were level at 0-0. Argentina started off brightly in the second quarter, but P Srjeesh cleared the ball up before the striker could take a shot.  Thanks to good batting effort, Sri Lanka won the 2 nd T20I in a thrilling manner against depleted Indian side played at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Wednesday. Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and decided to field first. Great Britain got off to an ideal start as Anne Martin scored a brilliant field goal due to a shoddy display by the Indian defense in the 2 nd minute to give them a 1-0 lead. After the pressure by Great Britain, the Indian team got their first genuine chance but was averted by the Great Britain goalkeeper. It was a good start by the German team who kept the possession and put the Indian defense under pressure. Remaining matches schedule of IPL 2021 announced

 The BCCI announced the schedule for the remaining matches of IPL 2021 to be played in the United Arab Emirates from 19 th September till the 15 th of October. Due to the bubble burst, the IPL was suspended. So far 29 matches were played in India from April 9 th . All the matches played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai and Chennai were conducted successfully. But due to COVID cases, BCCI decided to suspend the tournament. Delhi Capitals finished at the top of the points table and would be looking to continue their domination. Sunrisers Hyderabad had a disappointing season finishing last before the tournament was called off.  Despite India falling short of runs, the Indian bowlers showed great skills to register a comfortable win in the first T20I match played at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Sunday.   Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start by Chameera as he produced a great delivery to get rid of Prithvi Shaw off the very first delivery.  After losing 5 matches including one-off Test, 3 ODIs and 1 T20I, the Zimbabwe Cricket Team produced an all-round effort to defeat Bangladesh in 2 nd match played at Harare Sports Club, Harare on Friday.
